Conservative "Ex-Gay" Politician Admits to Sex With Minor

Conservative "Ex-Gay" Politician Admits to Sex With Minor

Linda Wall x390 (fair) | ADVOCATE.COM
A conservative running for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates admitted that she had an affair with a female student back when she was a junior high school gym teacher in the 1970s.

Linda Wall told the Associated Press that she was a different person 40 years ago when she had sexual relations with the unidentified student, who was a minor at the time. In 2006, she admitted under oath that she had been involved with a minor during a defamation hearing.

"I've never tried to hide that I was in homosexuality," she said. "If anybody Googles me, they would find that out there."

Wall said her conversion to Christianity stopped her addiction to marijuana, and changed her sexual orientation. Since then, she lobbied the Virginia General Assembly to oppose gay rights, marriage equality, and adoption for gay parents as a member of the Family Foundation.

She was never criminally charged, but could still face charges if the former student steps forward. According to the AP, the state of Virginia does not have much of a statute of limitations on sexual offenses.

Wall, a conservative with no party affiliation, is running against Democrat Connie Brennan and Republican Matt Fariss for an open seat in Appomattox, Va., vacated by Del. Watkins M. Abbitt, who is retiring after 26 years.  The AP obtained the information about Wall's sexual past from Paul Jost, a former political challenger who sued Wall for defamatory claims she made during the Republican primary.

On her website, Wall touts her past work in antigay lobbying, and said she would continue to ensure the state pass no gay rights laws.

"For two years, I worked with groups in the state to help pass the Marriage Amendment to the Constitution of Virginia defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman," she said. "I will defend that amendment and oppose any legislation that attempts to create or recognize any  other union, partnership, or legal status to which is assigned the rights or benefits of marriage."

PETITION TO LEGALIZE GLBT WORLDWIDE

To All people, GLBT Worldwide needs your help

Right now, almost 80 countries around the world make it a crime to be gay, lesbian or transgender. In 10 of those nations, you can be sentenced to death or life behind bars. The majority of these nations share a connection - they are members of the Commonwealth - an organization bringing together 54 nations to collaborate on legal, cultural and economic development.

The Commonwealth leaders are gathering this week in Perth, Australia where Kamalesh Sharma, Secretary General of the Commonwealth, just gave a courageous speech calling on each of the Commonwealth nations to finally end discrimination and criminalization of LGBT people. It's historic, but hardly a done deal: Forces within the Commonwealth are working double-time to silence Sharma and others, giving nations that send gays and lesbians to jail a free pass for yet another year.

We need to support Secretary General Sharma and show the other heads of state that a massive global outcry is bubbling up in their own countries and demanding fairness. The meeting kicks off this Friday - we need thousands to join Commonwealth citizens around the world and sign on to our statement of support for Secretary General Sharma in the next 48 hours, making his call impossible to ignore.

Will you take a minute to add your name and share this letter far and wide:

Joplin, MO Teacher's Bullying Solution: 'Don't Be Gay'; Suggests 13 More Kids Need to Die for Issue to Warrant Attention

Joplin
Yet another teacher is under fire for anti-gay remarks made on Facebook.
JoplinhsJim Whitney, a teacher at Joplin High School in Missouri responded to former student Josh Gonzalez, who posted a Facebook link to a news article 15-year-old Jamie Hubley, who committed suicide after being bullied.
Said Whitney: "Moral of the story: Don't be gay."
When another commenter asked, "How many more kids have to kill themselves before everyone realizes that this is an actual issue?," Whitney responded, "11-13 ought to do it. Somewhere in that vicinity."
The comments were posted by Missourians for Marriage Equality on the group's Facebook page, where they encouraged people to contact the Joplin school board.
The Joplin Globe reports:
Whitney did not respond to requests for an interview but released a statement via email on Monday afternoon saying he was sorry the incident occurred.

“I do not condone bullying or harassment of any kind and I am very aware and saddened by the negative impact this type of behavior creates. I regret that the posts appeared on Facebook. They do not reflect my personal views and I apologize for any and all offenses caused by the comment.”

Whitney, however, did not respond to follow-up emails and telephone calls to explain how comments that do not reflect his views came from his Facebook account, nor has he been available for additional questions.
Board President Ashley Micklethwaite said the school board would likely discuss the remarks at a meeting yesterday.

The Twitter account of the person or people who made chilling comments about the death of Stuart Walker appears to have been deleted.

As we reported earlier today, one person – who alleges to be from Liverpool and goes by the name of Jay Miller – used social networking site Twitter to claim Walker's horrific death was "great", adding: "better [he's] dead now than infecting people with Aids [sic]".

Stuart Walker, 28, was found dead at the side of a road with "horrible injuries" just before 5am on Saturday. He is thought to have been set alight and may have been sexually assaulted.

Now, after our lead story was re-Tweeted directly at the user – whose address was @Mabsmiller – the account no longer appears in search results or via previously active links.

It is not yet clear whether the profile was deleted by the user or by administrators at Twitter HQ.

The account's recent messages sparked anger and disgust amongst the community. One said: "Stuart Walker was a walking sponk bag [sic] may he rot in hell the crispy skinned twat!! Hahaha".

Another stated: "bastards could of waited until the 5th gonna have to find another guy to throw on my bonfire hahahha crispy skinned queer".

Two more followed – "wooooooooooo hahaha rot in hell Stuart walker you cum stained crispy skinned bum nut!!!!" and "burn baby burn!!! Woo Stuart walker got what he deserved burn in hell aids scum wooooooooo".

Hate speech laws in England and Wales forbid any communication interpreted as "hateful, threatening, abusive, or insulting" which targets a person's sexuality.

Scotland's Heath Secretary, Nicola Sturgeon, has met with Phillip Tartaglia – Bishop of Paisley – to discuss the future of same-sex marriage.
The meeting, which took place in Edinburgh, is the latest stage in a 14-week consultation on the issue by the Scottish government.
Previosuly, Tartaglia has campaigned fiercely against gay unions on religious premises, telling First Minister Alex Salmond that gay marriage is “wrong in principle” and is forever defined as between a man and a woman.
He also believes governments "do not have the authority to say what marriage is or to change its nature or to decree that people of the same sex can marry".
Despite this, Sturgeon said all views on the matter would be listened to.
Speaking tot the BBC after her meeting Tartaglia, Sturgeon said: "When I launched the consultation on same-sex marriage, I made clear that in addition to carefully considering the written responses, we intended to meet a wide range of organisations, including churches and faith groups.
"I also made clear that while ministers tend towards the initial view that same-sex marriage should be introduced, faith groups and their celebrants should not be obliged to solemnise same-sex marriage.
"We also gave an assurance that all views will be listened to, no final views have been reached and no decisions have been taken.
"I therefore welcome today's meeting with the Catholic Church which gave me an opportunity to hear the Church's views and concerns about the consultation, while also enabling me to repeat such assurances."

Gay activists in Brazil are celebrating today after a senior appeals court upheld that a lesbian couple can legally marry.
Gay activists in Brazil are celebrating today after a senior appeals court upheld that a lesbian couple can legally marry.
It is the highest court in Brazil to uphold a same-sex marriage – and comes less than six months after the South American country first granted civil unions.
The bid was part of a wider protest which saw several couples apply for full marriage licenses, not just civil partnerships.
The pair, like many others, previously had their applications blocked at two earlier stages in lower courts, but – in a 4-1 vote yesterday – the Supreme Appeals Court ruled that the Constitution "makes it possible for stable civil unions to become marriages".

According to the Associated Foreign Press, the court also added that: "sexual orientation should not serve as a pretext for excluding families from the legal protection that marriage represents."
Equality advocates hope the ruling will help relax attitudes in South America and influence neighbouring countries.

In Latin America, gay marriage is legal in Argentina and Mexico City.

Taking a stand for Jamey Rodemeyer

Posted on Tue, Oct. 25, 2011

Commentary: Taking a stand for Jamey Rodemeyer

Leonard Pitts Jr. | The Miami Herald

last updated: October 24, 2011 11:53:30 AM
Zachary Quinto came out recently.
Ordinarily, the news that Star Trek’s new Mr. Spock had told New York magazine he was gay would barely register. It has become, a rather ordinary thing, celebrities disclosing their hidden sexuality.
But Quinto came out for Jamey.
Jamey’s death, he wrote on his blog, showed him “that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality.”
Jamey Rodemeyer, 14, hanged himself in September. Just a few days into his freshman year, he apparently felt he could not take the bullying he endured in the hallways of Williamsville North High School in greater Buffalo, NY — or online.
“JAMEY IS STUPID, GAY, FAT AND UGLY. HE MUST DIE!” one individual posted, using the all-caps style favored by the shrill and the unhinged.
“I wouldn’t care if you died,” another wrote. “No one would.”
Incredibly, it continued even after his suicide. Jamey’s sister Alyssa went to a dance trying, she told CNN’s Anderson Cooper, to not “be in pain for just these two hours.” She says some kids at the dance chanted that they were glad her brother is dead.
Jamey’s “sin” is that he was bisexual and most of his friends were girls.
“I promise you, it will get better,” he had said in a video for the It Gets Better Project, a website (itgetsbetter.org) of 25,000 videos from everyday people and luminaries like Ellen DeGeneres, Anne Hathaway and President Obama to encourage lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered kids who are bullied and ostracized.
There is something inexpressibly poignant in watching this child, who had complained for years of being bullied, try to convince others of something he apparently found hard to believe himself.
The dynamics of bigotry are remarkably consistent whether the bigotry be racial, religious, ethnic or sexual: The target group is invariably defined as a threatening, inferior or offensive “other” to whom no ordinary duties of human decency and respect are owed.
But with sexual orientation, it is easier to hide the offending trait. The abuse becomes something you have to volunteer for. That’s what Quinto just did. And what other gay people must find the courage to do.
Yes, that is easier said than done. To hide in plain sight is to protect yourself from rejection by those whose acceptance means everything. But it is also to flinch from the moral responsibility of standing with and for your own.
It is a good and honorable thing to remind troubled kids that high school ends, that it gets better. Yet that can be cold comfort when you’re 14 and facing four more years of abuse. Four years is nearly a quarter of your life. So what is needed is not simply to encourage kids to be patient until graduation but, rather, to root out that which makes patience necessary. Meaning the cruel intolerance that calls itself moral righteousness and still finds far too much comfort in our homes, worship houses and schools.
By coming out in honor of Jamey, standing with and for this tortured boy, Zachary Quinto acknowledges the obvious.
It does not get better on its own.

Lesbians Kicked Out Of Tim Hortons In Ontario For Going 'Beyond Displays Of Affection'

Lesbians Kicked Out Of Tim Hortons In Ontario For Going 'Beyond Displays Of Affection'

BLENHEIM, Ont. - A southwestern Ontario reverend says he was acting as a concerned father when he complained about a couple's public display of affection at a Tim Hortons in Blenheim last month.
Eric Revie of Glad Tidings Community Church says he was there with his wife and two children when he asked the manager to tell the couple to tone it down.
Riley Duckworth, 25, of London, and her partner Patricia Pattenden, 23, say they were told to leave the coffee shop because they are lesbians.
But Revie says at the time he thought it was a man and woman and found out the couple was actually same sex after he complained.
A spokeswoman for Tim Hortons says the couple was asked to leave after they "went beyond public displays of affection" while visiting the coffee shop three weeks ago.
Duckworth says she and Pattenden were outside drinking coffee with a group of family and friends and kissed once or twice but denies they were groping each other.
"There was a couple that were straddling each other, making out... not just kissing, going further than that," Revie told CFCO radio in Chatham on Monday.
"I had my children there, I asked the manager if she could ask them to tone it down," he said.
Duckworth said she and Pattenden were told "to leave within five minutes or the cops would be called."
"The manager said that our behaviour was inappropriate and that it was a family friendly establishment and it wasn't acceptable there," Duckworth said.
They were shocked but left to avoid creating a scene, she said. They have been to the same outlet previously and had received stares from customers, but nothing had ever been said, she added.
A Facebook group was created Sunday evening calling for a demonstration outside the coffee shop on Thursday that will be attended by friends, family and supporters including members of Pride Chatham-Kent.
By Monday afternoon, several hundred people had joined the Facebook group.
Revie said he had no idea the couple he was complaining about was gay.
"At the time that I went to talk to the manager, I was under the impression that it was a guy and girl, not two girls," Revie said.
Alexandra Cygal, manager of public affairs at Tim Hortons' head office, said it was not the store's intention to "offend or target anyone based on their sexual orientation."
"Tim Hortons and its restaurant owners have always welcomed all families and communities to their restaurants and will continue to do so," she said.
"The guests' behaviour went beyond public displays of affection and was making other guests feel uncomfortable," she said.
The management has apologized to the women and invited them back to their restaurant, added Cygal.
Duckworth said she was not contacted directly by anyone at Tim Hortons and read the apology for the first time on a website.
Duckworth said she'll never return to Tim Hortons again.
"We want to make sure this won't happen again to anybody else because it's wrong and it should have never happened in the first place."

Dan Savage To Herman Cain: Prove Being Gay Is A Choice

Dan Savage To Herman Cain: Prove Being Gay Is A Choice

By Jeremy Kinser
DAN SAVAGE X390 (PUBLICITY) | ADVOCATE.COM
Dan Savage has challenged Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain to perform a sex act on him to prove that being gay is a choice.

The "It Gets Better" activist was incensed at comments Cain made to CNN's Piers Morgan earlier this week. "I think it's a sin because of my biblical beliefs," Cain said on Wednesday. "And although people don't agree with me, I happen to think that it is a choice."

On his blog Savage posted an open letter to Cain:

Dear Herman,
If being gay is a choice, show us the proof. Choose it. Choose to be gay yourself. Show America how that's done, Herman, show us how a man can choose to be gay. Suck my dick, Herman. Name the time and the place and I'll bring my dick and a camera crew and you can suck me off and win the argument.
Very sincerely yours,
Dan Savage

But Savage had more to say: "When someone argues that being gay is a choice, he's not just insulting gay people. (And ignoring the science of sexual orientation.) He's insulting straight people. If homosexuality is a choice, then so is heterosexuality. Last night on CNN Herman Cain said that being straight is something that a straight person can take or leave. Herman Cain believes that heterosexuality is something a heterosexual can decide to walk away from, like an underwater house or a lousy meal. Straight people should get angry when they hear a straight person making this argument."

More schools take action to stem anti-gay bullying

More schools take action to stem anti-gay bullying

A history teacher amends his lessons on the civil rights movement to include the push for gay equality. A high school removes Internet filters blocking gay advocacy websites. Six gay students sue their district, saying officials failed to protect them from bullies.
LOS ANGELES — A history teacher amends his lessons on the civil rights movement to include the push for gay equality. A high school removes Internet filters blocking gay advocacy websites. Six gay students sue their district, saying officials failed to protect them from bullies.
After anti-gay bullying led to a spate of teen suicides last year, school districts across the country are stepping up efforts to prevent such incidents, while more students are coming forward to report bullies.
"It's an issue that has taken over the public consciousness since last fall," said Jill Marcellus, spokeswoman for the Gay-Straight Alliance Network. "People realize it doesn't have to be this way. We can make it better."
Awareness of anti-gay bullying is increasing as acceptance of gay people has grown in society. Gay marriage is legal in several states, gays are now permitted to serve openly in the military and, in California, schools will soon have to teach gay-rights history.
Kids, even as young as middle school age, feel more emboldened to openly express their sexual or gender orientation, but many are not prepared for a possible backlash, gay-rights advocates say.
According to a 2009 survey by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, 85 percent of gay teens reported harassment at school within the previous year and two-thirds felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation. The problem also extends to boys perceived as effeminate and girls deemed masculine.
"A lot of people have the idea that coming out as soon as possible will make themselves feel more comfortable," said Raymond Ferronato, a 16-year-old gay junior in Antioch, Calif. "I tell them come out when you're ready to come out, and only do it when you're safe."
Schools became aware last year of how unsafe it can be.
Five gay teens, ranging from middle school to college age, killed themselves in California, Indiana, Minnesota, Texas and New Jersey, after being bullied, in some cases for years. Last month, 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer killed himself in Buffalo, N.Y., after years of homophobic harassment.
In one case, the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education found the Tehachapi Unified School District in California violated the civil rights of 13-year-old Seth Walsh, who hung himself after relentless taunting and fruitless complaints to school officials. The district agreed in a July settlement to train staff and students how to prevent bullying, organize community meetings and form an advisory committee, among other steps.
Federal laws clearly uphold students' rights to express sexual orientation - boys, for example, are legally allowed to wear skirts just as girls can wear pants - and obligate schools to provide all students with a safe environment, but problems tend to arise on a social level, often outside the classroom.
The California trial of 17-year-old Brandon McInerney, charged in the 2008 classroom killing of 15-year-old Larry King, showed how a school fulfilled the law by upholding a boy's right to wear makeup and high heels, but grappled with the social fallout - bullying of King and King's response, which was to aggressively flaunt his sexual orientation, including flirtatious and harassing comments to boys.
One of them, McInerney, then 14, is accused of shooting King to death in a classroom. After an August trial ended in a hung jury, prosecutors now plan a second trial.
Testimony from several teachers showed they struggled to cope with escalating tension between King and his bullies, while also respecting his civil rights.
School districts across the country are now training teachers and students in techniques to stop bullying.
For example, instead of a teacher simply telling kids to quit using a disrespectful name, stopping taunts is more effective when the teacher explains why teasing hurts and getting bullies to recall instances when they were taunted or acknowledge that they would feel hurt if they were, experts said.
"It's about making them realize what it's like," said Travis Brown, an anti-bullying speaker now on a 200-school tour.
Students must be told to intervene if they witness bullying and to accept others' differences even if they don't agree with them. That goes for teachers, too. It is illegal, for instance, to order a boy to wash off makeup if girls are also allowed to wear it.
For bullying targets, students should not respond with aggression, but to stand up for themselves by reporting incidents and filing complaints. "It's important to take a stand, not fight back. If they fight back, they're subject to the same repercussions as the bullies," Brown said.
Schools are also shoring up anti-bullying training with peer leadership programs that encourage students to stand up for bullying targets.
Paloma Valley High School in southeastern California instituted such a program as well as teacher workshops and student assemblies, after a gay student complained about a teacher writing "S" for sinner on her hand. Another student said he was unfairly punished for responding to a bully's taunts, while the Gay Straight Alliance was told it could not make announcements during gay history month.
Students at some schools say efforts are paying off.
In Central California, high school senior Kira Garcia said she could no longer idly stand by while witnessing gay friends being taunted and joined her school's Gay-Straight Alliance as a straight ally. As more kids have joined the alliance and become more active in speaking out, she said, she's noticed a drop-off in name-calling.
At San Juan Hills High School in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., transgender senior Benji Delgadillo requested his history teacher include gay people in lessons and the movement for equality in the civil rights unit. "At first, he was a little hesitant, but then he agreed," he said. "He amended the Power Point that day."
Delgadillo also got a "Battle of the Sexes" event stopped after pointing out its sexist nature to the principal.
Despite growing awareness, there's a long way to go.
Six gay students sued the Anoka-Hennepin, Minn., school district in recent months over its "neutrality" policy on anti-gay bullying, saying the policy effectively licenses bullies. The Justice Department is investigating the policy after the suicide of a 15-year-old student.
The American Civil Liberties Union-Southern California, which launched the Seth Walsh Project to advocate for gay students last year, is investigating a number of schools where students have complained of anti-gay discrimination and bullying.
In one case, it prodded the Rowland Unified School District on the outskirts of Los Angeles to stop blocking pro-gay content on the Internet. The district said it was blocked by accident and removed the filters.
James Gilliam, ACLU director, said he's encouraged, however, that more students are stepping forward to make complaints. "Students not reporting bullying is the number one issue," he said. "We know they're being bullied."

After Violent Attack, Serbian LGBTs Say, “That’s Enough!”

After Violent Attack, Serbian LGBTs Say, “That’s Enough!” (Video)
Following an attack in Belgrade on a lesbian who was wearing gay symbols and the release of her attacker, the Serbia Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) held a large protest outside Serbian government offices on Wednesday under the slogan “It’s enough!”

The protest was protected by a large number of police in riot gear, but there were no incidents.

The protesters carried banners with messages such as “These hands are not violent,” “Homophobia is cured,” “I do not tolerate torture,” “Offenders in the four walls,” “Violence on the streets-your own risk,” “We are all A.Z” and “Serbian not be silent.” They waved the flag of the gay movement but not the flag of Serbia.

The near-fatal attack on the lesbian was, said GSA, one of the most serious attacks in the last several years.

It is obvious that attackers no longer shrink from trying to take the lives of those who are of a different sexual orientation or who wear symbols of the LGBT movement. GSA therefore asks the relevant state institutions, and especially those politicians who have lately been talking about LGBT people and their activities in a negative context, if it is necessary that somebody be killed in order to finally realise how serious and severe the problems are that LGBT population in Serbia faces and in order to begin solving those problems.

Wednesday’s protest demanded that the government of Serbia develop and implement a national program to combat violence and discrimination and pass a hate crimes law.

The woman that was attacked wrote:

I am one of many that this is happening – it could happen to anyone of you!

I know that my friends are afraid to report similar attacks that are happening to them but I decided not to withdraw. I defended that night, and now I do not want to keep quiet! And it does not matter whether I’m lesbian or straight – someone tried to kill me!

I am bitter and angry that they let the one out who wanted to take my life … What should happen to make it relevant and keep such dangerous refuge from the streets? If I had not resisted and managed to stab or kill me, would that be sufficient cause for detention? What happened to me will continue to happen until you stand up to bullies and those who instigate them.

I want to live and I want my life to continue. I do not want to go anywhere, this is my city that I love and not let these maniacs tend to me from it. I do not want them to be pictures of Serbia and our future!

President of the Gay Straight Alliance Lazar Pavlovic told reporters that members of the LGBT community want to live freely and without fear, like other citizens of Serbia.

He said that the release by a judge of those responsible for the most recent attack sent a message to the Serbian public that such violence against LGBTs is permissible:

People no longer wish to suffer such things. They are very unhappy. These things happen always, but very little reaches the public. People want to protect their lives, the state to finally move in a systematic crackdown on violence and discrimination.

Goran Miletic from the Organizing Committee of the Pride Parade in Belgrade told Deutche Welle that Serbia will now find it even more difficult to deal with homophobia because with their ban on Gay Pride, (it was supposedly canceled because of the threat of violence, but the move was widely believed to be linked to the upcoming elections). The Serbian authorities sided with the opponents of the parade.

Given what the state has done this year, the process will be even more difficult. The state this year banned all rallies. Representatives of the meetings were thus found in the same basket – extremists, and representatives of the Pride Parade. It gives a green light to all bullies and all those who are not at all well-meaning, that in the future attack sexual minorities.

Coordinator of the National Strategy of Serbia for European Integration, Vladimir Todoric, told the Tanjug press agency:

If members of this population still can not walk freely, if you are beaten up because of the clothes they wear, no one in Serbia is not guaranteed by any security or freedom of speech and behavior, and perhaps even the right to life.

According to new figures from UNHCR on asylum applications in the first half of this year, Serbia remains one of the major sources for asylum claims in Western countries.

First Russian LGBT Sport Federation was registered by the GO of MoJ of Russian Federation in St. Petersburg.

First Russian LGBT Sport Federation was registered by the General Office of Ministry of Justice of Russian Federation in St. Petersburg.

The goal of the Federation is organization of sport events and projects aimed at health protection, promotion of a healthy lifestyle, physical culture and sports among the LGBT community and others who accept the goals of the organization.

As Konstantin Yablotskiy, president of the Russian LGBT Sport Federation said, registration will let the organization advocate for the rights of homosexual sportsmen relying on the Russian legal system, promote sports among the LGBT community and provide other gays and lesbians with a positive example in order to show that it is possible and necessary to do sports and follow a healthy lifestyle.

The sport organization was registered with the help of the human rights movement Russian LGBT Network. According to its chairman Igor Kochetkov, the registration of LGBT organizations in Russia is usually challenging. Their requests are oftentimes rejected due to phony reasons. Therefore, one of the spheres the Russian LGBT Network deals with is support of initiative groups defending their right to self-expression regardless of their sexual orientation and willing to be registered as a legal body. Registration provides them with all the rights that public associations lack.

It should be mentioned that the Russian LGBT Network has assisted with the registration of other organizations in St. Petersburg and Arkhangelsk. The case of the registration of a Tyumen LGBT organization Rainbow House (Raduzhnyi Dom) is being considered in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.

The LGBT Sport Federation in Russia was founded in 2010. The first LGBT sport festival will take place in St. Petersburg on September 23-25. Within the course of the festival there will be competitions in 6 types of sports – football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, and ping-pong.

Lukashenko: As for lesbians, this is the blame of men, this is tolerable. But if men – I do not understand this.

Lukashenko: As for lesbians, this is the blame of men, this is tolerable. But if men – I do not understand this.

Aleksandr Lukashenkо said Friday that he did not accept homosexuality and had told German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle about that while meeting with him ahead of last December’s presidential election in Belarus.

Mr. Westerwelle took offense and still bears a grudge, the Belarusian leader told a group of Russian reporters in Minsk.

He said that he regretted having revealed his negative attitude toward gay couples at the meeting with the German minister, who is openly gay.

Mr. Westerwelle met with Mr. Lukashenko together with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski to offer Belarus financial assistance in exchange of a democratic election.

"Sikorski asked me, ‘What attitude do you, Alexandr Ryhoravich, have toward gay couples?’ I suggested that if they are female, we, men, are to be blame. Women doing this with women are pardonable. They can be tolerated. But if they are male, it is a horror.”

Mr. Lukashenko said that he added that he would not ban a gay pride parade but would tell its organizers to hold in the suburbs "to show people everything.” "I said it with a jeer,” he noted.

"I did not want to offend him,” the Belarusian leader said, speaking of the German minister. "Let him go ahead, if he likes this or if this is accepted there. But it is beyond understanding to me like, perhaps, for many others present here.”

Dirty Tricks in Nigerian Parliament in Anti-Gay Marriage Bill Push

Dirty Tricks in Nigerian Parliament in Anti-Gay Marriage Bill Push

Following two previous attempts, the Nigerian parliament has revived its efforts at further criminalizing homosexuality in a new bill: “An Act to Prohibit Marriage between Persons of Same Gender, Solemnization Of Same And For Other Matters Related Therewith.”
And according to a report in Behind The Mask, they are trying to get it passed by ‘wrong footing’ Nigerian activists and international attention.
Olumide Makanjuola, Director of Program of the Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERs) based in Lagos said:
“I will not be surprised if we read from the press, the same way we read about the bill, that the public hearing happened and the senate passed the bill.”
The bill was actually introduced into the Senate in July but information about its existence was only published this month. Public hearings about the bill have not been published, which is not usual, even though they are not a legal requirement. It is at a public hearing that Nigerian human rights groups can express their opposition.
“This might be a trick to speedily pass the bill at the senate without intervention of human rights activists,” said Makanjuola.
Yemisi Ilesanmi, coordinator of Nigerian LGBT in Diaspora Against Same Sex Laws, said
“Lawmakers are fast tracking the bill. There are concerns within the Nigerian LGBT community that the recent bomb blasts in the country would be used as a pretext to deny public access to the hearing.”
The bill is currently being scrutinized by the Senate’s committees on Human rights and Judicial Matters, Health and Culture and Tourism. The committees are expected to review the bill and provide recommendation to the house at the third reading.
The bill says:
1.–(1) “Marriage Contract entered between persons of same Gender is hereby prohibited in Nigeria.”
1.–(3) “Marriage Contract entered between persons of same gender by virtue a certificate issued by a foreign country shall be void in Nigeria, and any benefits accruing there from by virtue of the certificate shall not be enforced by any court of law in Nigeria.”
6. “Same Gender Marriage” means the coming together of persons of the same sex with the purpose of living together as husband and wife or for other purposes of same sexual relationship.”
It criminalizes anyone who “witnesses, abets and aids the solemnization of a same gender marriage contract,” but it does not define what witnessing or abetting means.
The Bill’s sponsor, Senator Domingo Obende, said in parliament that the bill is needed because “same sex marriage is spreading and spreading round the whole world just like pornography and terrorism which has become the order of the day if not arrested on time.”
If the Senate passes the bill, it will then go to the lower chamber, the House of Representatives. The House will go through the same process as the Senate. If passed, the bill then goes to the President for his assent.
Nigeria already criminalizes homosexuality with up to 14 years imprisonment. In some Northern states, there is the death penalty under Sharia law, although this has never been carried out.
Ilesanmi said that:
“This bill would lead to harassment of people for their actual or imputed sexual orientation. It would also stifle freedom of expression and association through the proposed ban on organizations that support lesbian and gay rights.”
“The passing of the bill would give official validation to the harassment of sexual minorities and many homophobic persons would use it as a license to discriminate against lesbians and gays,” said Ms Ilesanmi.
Some human rights organizations in Nigeria have condemned the bill and Behind The Mask has reported on comments on Nigerian online news websites against the bill.
The Coalition for the Defense of Sexual Rights in its press statement said:
“We wish to remind the parliament that, Nigeria is a secular state. Therefore, implicating that laws of our land cannot and should not be drafted and/or enact on the basis of religious and cultural value. This value already differ as Nigeria is a heterogeneous society, hence our federal system of government.”
Previous attempts to further criminalize homosexuality in 2006 and 2009 were quietly shelved following international condemnation.
Take Action: Tell Nigeria criminalizing homosexuality is wrong!

Belarus Gay Activist Says British Company Fired Him Because He is Gay

Belarus Gay Activist Says British Company Fired Him Because He is Gay

The Editor of the Belorussian website gay.by, Alexander Poluyan, says he was fired by the local office of British American Tobacco (BAT) because he is gay.
Poluyan says he was forced to write a resignation letter  on October 11th by the head of the company’s communications department because he claimed that Poluyan had not done his duties. However Poluyan says that other employees told him it was because the department head had learned that he was a gay activist.
In a statement, BAT said that Poluyan had previously worked for them as a contractor and was employed on a one-year contract and was on probation. They say they knew he was the editor of gay.by when he was hired.
“During his probation period, it became apparent that Alexander was under performing against the agreed expectations and requirements of the job. Feedback was given to him on a number of occasions by his line manager and the HR department, in line with the company performance management policy.”
“Alexander was given fair and unbiased treatment during his employment with us and there were no incidents or suggestions of Alexander being treated differently or discriminated against because of his sexuality,” they said.
The company says that there are openly gay staff working for them in Belarus.
Poluyan says he received no feedback on his performance and that few staff knew he was gay because although he did not conceal it he did not talk about it until asked.
“I understand that now, BAT will protect there [sic] name and say that they tolerant towards homosexuals – it’s expected. I will not dispute the fact that in some countries towards homosexuals humane and tolerant, but the actions of some staff in the office in Belarus, shows the opposite,” he said.
“Having 8-year working experience, I’ve never faced a similar problem. My colleagues and friends have always known and know that I’m a gay, I live with my guy and that I am engaged in LGBT-activity. This case shows real position of homosexuals in the country where even employees of the international company, widely declaring about nondiscrimination on any basis, can’t accept a homosexual in the command. What should be said about conditions gays and lesbians are who work at public establishments?!” he said.
“Many people ask us what kind of homophobia we have in our country? What are the oppressions of gays and lesbians? Once again I felt this situation and I can share personal experience.”
Discrimination at work against LGBTs is legal is Belarus, where homosexuality was only decriminalized in 1994, and the state has a history of repressing LGBT organizing. Gay Pride has just been banned again in the capital, Minsk.
According to the results of a survey conducted by Gay.by in April 2011, 65.6% of respondents have thought of leaving Belarus because of homophobia. Many LGBT Belorussians have claimed asylum in Western Europe.
British American Tobacco is a FTSE 100 company headquartered in London. Brands include Camel and Lucky Strike although the company has diversified, particularly into financial services. The UK Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke is a former Director.

Boy Scouts Kept Confidential Files on Pedophiles

Boy Scouts Kept Confidential Files on Pedophiles

The Boy Scouts of America and Scouts Canada both kept confidential files on pedophile scout leaders, but never reported them to police. As a result, pedophiles like Richard Turley were able to molest dozen boys over several decades in both Canada and the United States.
Secret “Perversion” Files in Canada and the United States
The CBC’s documentary news show The Fifth Estate has uncovered a secret system used by Scouts Canada to document sex abusers in an attempt to prevent them from being involved in scouting. The “confidential list” is kept in the national headquarters in Ottawa and can only be accessed by a handful of people. Canadian lawyer Rob Talach is calling for Scouts Canada to release its files to the police, indicating that it could provide additional evidence in cases that could still be prosecuted. It could, of course, also help prevent further abuse from taking place. There is some confusion about what exactly is contained in the files, as Scouts Canada claims it only keeps records of suspension and termination and that it shares information with the police and youth protective services.
In the United States, similar files exist. The documents, known as the “perversion files” have been released to lawyers that were suing the Boy Scouts of America. In 2010, Kerry Lewis was awarded $1.4 million because the Boy Scouts of America failed to protect him from an assistant Scoutmaster that they knew was a child molester. According to Seattle-based lawyer Tim Kosnoff, who had access to the files, around 5,000 files existed from the period of 1947 to 2005, of which about half were created between 1991 and 2005.
Richard Turley: Two Countries, Three Decades, Numerous Victims
The CBC has meticulously detailed the case of sex offender Richard Turley who began molesting boy scouts in Canada in 1971 when he was only 17 years old. Four years later, in 1975, he kidnapped a boy he met in California while visiting a local scout troop. Turley was arrested and pleaded guilty and committed to a state hospital where he stayed until 1976. After being released, he went back to California where he spent several summers working at a Boy Scout camp. After the last day of camp in 1979, he spent an extra night at camp with three boys and molested all of them. After one of the boys told his father, the camp director confronted Turley, who admitted what he had done and agreed to leave and return to Canada.  No one reported the incident to the police, but a confidential “perversion file” was created at the Boy Scouts of America’s national office.

Turley returned to Canada, where he continued his involvement with Scouts Canada. Sometime in the 1980s, Turley was added to Scouts Canada’s “confidential list” and asked to resign from the Scouts. He was later arrested in 1988 for sexually assaulting a child at a swimming pool and served 30 days in jail. However, it wasn’t until a suspicious girlfriend reported him to police in 1995 that any significant investigation took place. Turley was eventually convicted of abusing four boys and spent five years in prison, followed by seven years of supervised parole. Turley, who has completed an intense sex-offender program, admits to having at least a dozen victims over the years and feels that scouting was an easy way to find boys to molest.
Scouts Exclusively Protecting Their Own

The system used by the Scouts in both Canada and the United States appeared to be uniquely designed to protect their own, with a complete lack of regard for the implications to those outside of their community. The CBC reported that a confidential 1972 policy memo urged Boy Scout officials who are dealing with molesters to “indicate [to the accused molester] that the BSA is not sharing this information with anyone and only wish him to stop all Scouting activity.” In the case of Turley, Scouts executive Buford Hill told the Los Angeles Times that “the parents of the three boys agreed to not press charges if he would leave…” and further added “hopefully he went back to Canada and that was their problem” (source: CBC).
Sex Abuse Claims Continue, Screening is Tightened
Meanwhile, in the United States, law suits continue to be filed against the Boy Scouts of America. Four new lawsuits have been filed recently, bringing the total to 35 complaints in 11 different states since 2007. Officials in both Canada and the United States claim that the screening of volunteers has been tightened in recent years. Turley, however, doesn’t think it is enough to stop people like him. He told the CBC, “Scouting is still a flawed movement. If I was a parent, I would never put my kids in Scouts.”
