Ex-Marine Describes Violent Hazing and the Lies That Covered It Up

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — In Marine Corps boot camp, Thomas Weaver learned to endure punches, kicks and choking by drill instructors in the Third Recruit Training Battalion at Parris Island, S.C. When one instructor repeatedly bashed his head against a doorway, he kept quiet and acted as if it were no big deal. But what he eventually could not take was the lying that covered up the abuse.
“We were taught the Marines is all about honor and honesty, and my superiors were constantly telling us all to lie about what was happening,” Mr. Weaver, 21, said in a recent interview at his parents’ home in rural northern Florida. “I had been really proud to join the Marines, but I was not proud of what we were doing.”
A Marine Corps investigation prompted in part by Mr. Weaver’s information has uncovered widespread abuse by drill instructors in the so-called Thumping Third. In a lengthy interview, Mr. Weaver — a top-notch recruit who has since been kicked out of the military, ending his career — provided new details of how he said hazing infected all levels of drill instructors and instructors carefully concealed their abuse and threatened to give recruits “stitches” if anyone told.
The continuing inquiry has so far led to the removal of three leaders. The corps has said 20 Marines face possible criminal charges.
One drill instructor tumbled a Muslim recruit in a hot clothes dryer, according to a report from the investigation. The same instructor hazed another Muslim recruit repeatedly shortly before the recruit leapt to his death from the barracks, the report found.
The Marines declined to comment on Mr. Weaver’s accusations, and certain aspects were impossible to corroborate. Another Marine in the battalion confirmed most details of his account, but asked to remain unnamed, saying he feared being singled out for retribution.
“We were all scared, terrified,” Mr. Weaver said. “I wrote a lot of letters home about what was going on, but I tore them all up because I was afraid the drill instructors would read them.”
Hazing in Marine Corps boot camp has popped up persistently over the years, even as the leadership has added more safeguards.
The stubborn problem reveals an underlying struggle in the Marine Corps over its identity. Most officers are pushing for an inclusive and orderly force, with more women and minorities, and strict regulations to protect against abuse. But in the ranks, a widespread belief holds that the corps, which prides itself on making some of the toughest war fighters in the world, needs harsh training and must push back to preserve traditions against the creep of politically correct mediocrity.
“It’s like, they are so focused on trying to make real Marines that they don’t see how they are hurting a lot of good recruits,” said Mr. Weaver, who has begun telling his story publicly.
Mr. Weaver graduated from boot camp in July 2015, near the top of his class. He was meritoriously promoted ahead of others and planned to make a military career. But what he saw at boot camp gnawed at him until he could no longer sleep, he said, and he was too depressed to attend his next level of training. He was hospitalized in September on suicide watch. In November, he told his commander he was too depressed to train, and the Marine Corps moved to formally discipline him.
That month, Mr. Weaver’s father, Troy Weaver, contacted the commander to explain that he thought his son’s depression was a result of hazing in boot camp. His son then gave a detailed written account to his superiors about what he had seen at Parris Island, and the inquiry was opened.
In December, Mr. Weaver was kicked out of the Marine Corps for not training and given an other-than-honorable discharge used to punish bad troops. He is trying to upgrade his discharge, but the system is slow and appeals are often unsuccessful.
In a statement, the Marine Corps said that Mr. Weaver’s depression did not qualify for a medical discharge and that an other-than-honorable discharge is proper when troops refuse to train.

Despite the common image of boot camp as a place where barking sergeants in broad-brimmed hats have nearly free rein to harass recruits, strict rules control what instructors can do. They cannot swear at recruits, hit them, kick them or even touch them unless it is to provide guidance during training that regulations call “corrective action.”
Regulations also limit what the Marines call “incentive training”: extra push-ups, crunches and other exercise as punishment. There are limits, for example, on how often and for how long such exercises can be ordered, and rules require that they be performed on a padded athletic mat.
Mr. Weaver, a varsity track runner and captain of his high school soccer team who arrived at Parris Island ready to face grueling physical tests, said he soon found that drill instructors treated the rules with tongue-in-cheek contempt.
A few days into training, while being issued equipment, he said, he watched an instructor grab a recruit by the neck after a minor mistake and slam him to the ground, where he held him by the throat while swearing at him.

After choking the recruit, the instructor stood up, looked at the rest of the group and asked them whether he was hurting the recruit or “making a corrective action,” Mr. Weaver said.
“We all said ‘You were making a corrective action, sir,’ ” Mr. Weaver said. “We were all too scared to say anything else.”
“Every drill instructor played that card,” he added. “They would hit someone or choke someone, then made us say it was O.K. when they knew it wasn’t.”
Instructors forced recruits to hold stress positions on concrete until elbows and knuckles bled, he said. They often ordered recruits to form a human wall to hide punishment from view or took recruits alone into the bathroom.
Instructors singled out minority recruits they disliked for extra hazing, Mr. Weaver said, including two immigrants, a man with what Mr. Weaver called a “feminine voice” and a Muslim from Brooklyn whom instructors called “the terrorist.” Twice, Mr. Weaver said, the Muslim recruit was sent for medical attention after long bouts of extra training.
“They would just push them, try to make them fail,” Mr. Weaver said.
That recruit, who is still in the Marines, declined to comment.
Instructors hid hazing from officers, Mr. Weaver said, and officers did little to police it. Most of the abuse, he said, happened in the barracks, known in the Marine Corps as squad bays, where officers rarely ventured and where instructors said “real Marines are made.” There, Mr. Weaver said, instructors piled dozens of recruits in a small boiler room and walked on them. He also said the instructors covered the squad bay in laundry soap and ordered the recruits to push the tallest recruit along the concrete as “a human scrub brush.”
“They were always telling us, ‘What happens in the squad bay stays in the squad bay,’ ” Mr. Weaver said.
Recruits were warned not to report the abuse, he said, and instructors repeated a motto used in street gangs and prisons, “Snitches get stitches.”
Junior and senior instructors covered for one another, he said.
Violence was a common response to slight missteps, Mr. Weaver said. He said he saw his senior drill instructor and another instructor take one recruit into the woods after the recruit accidentally struck one of the instructors during a training exercise, and beat him bloody.

Mr. Weaver said he was grabbed by the shirt by a third instructor after inadvertently bumping into him, and that instructor slammed his head repeatedly against the doorway until other recruits pulled him away.
Mr. Weaver said that he reported the assault to his senior drill instructor, but that his instructor responded by saying that Mr. Weaver did not appear to be injured and should stay out of the instructors’ way.
Mr. Weaver also provided new details about the night in July last year when the Muslim recruit was forced into a dryer.
Late that night, he said, four or five drill instructors from another platoon came into the squad bay smelling of alcohol and screamed at recruits to lie face down on the floor. Mr. Weaver said he watched them repeatedly slap a recruit, hard enough that the blow could be heard through the barracks.
Later, Mr. Weaver said, the group returned. He watched from his bunk as they took the Muslim recruit into the laundry room.
“We heard screaming, doors being slammed, loud noises,” Mr. Weaver said. “I was scared, I didn’t know what they were doing to him.”
Afterward, Mr. Weaver said, the recruit was clearly shaken. Mr. Weaver tried to comfort him when, he said, one of his drill instructors came in and told the Muslim recruit not to report what had happened.
Mr. Weaver graduated from basic training in July and shipped off to Naval Air Station Pensacola, in Florida. But the abuse he had seen in boot camp caught up with him, he said. Bad dreams kept him from sleeping; he lost motivation to train. A lifelong runner, he lacked the energy to go for a jog on the beach, he said.
“Everyone was so proud of me, but I just saw the Marines as one big lie that I was now a part of,” he said.
After he was hospitalized for being suicidal in September, he was put on medication and began seeing a base psychologist.
In November Mr. Weaver told his commander he was not well enough to train. The psychologist treating him wrote two letters to his commander, Maj. Jenny A. Colegate, recommending a general discharge for medical reasons.
But Major Colegate, who in a previous assignment had trained recruits at Parris Island, ordered Mr. Weaver to return to duty. When he refused, citing the psychologist’s advice, the Marines discharged him for a “pattern of misconduct.”
Maj. Clark Carpenter, a Marine Corps spokesman, said that Major Colegate was not available for comment but that the discharge was technically correct because Mr. Weaver had refused to train. He added, though, that not all information had been included in the recommendation for a discharge that went for final approval, and that it was likely that if it had been included, Mr. Weaver would not have received the punitive discharge
For months Mr. Weaver has been doing odd jobs in his neighborhood. The other-than-honorable discharge on his record has become a badge of shame and makes it hard to find work, he said.
He said he feels as if his future was taken from him.
“All I ever wanted to be was a Marine, and I was a good Marine,” he said. “But now I’m being punished for a bunch of stupid stuff that isn’t supposed to happen.”

NEW YORK: Christian Activist Convicted Of Kidnapping Child Of Gay Parents, Faces Eight Years In Prison

The Associated Press reports:
A Virginia businessman was convicted Thursday of international parental kidnapping and conspiracy for helping a mother take her daughter out of the country to avoid losing custody to her former partner.
A federal jury in Buffalo returned the verdict against Philip Zodhiates, of Waynesboro, on Thursday after hearing during a weeklong trial how he had driven Lisa Miller and 7-year-old Isabella Miller-Jenkins from Virginia to the Canadian border in 2009 so they could fly from Toronto to Nicaragua, and had helped with their living arrangements in the Central American nation.
Neither Miller nor Isabella, now 14, have been seen in the United States since.
Lawyers for Zodhiates, the owner of a direct mail business that serves conservative Christian groups, denied that he was trying to obstruct the other mother’s parental rights by helping Miller, who became an evangelical Christian after dissolving her civil union with Janet Jenkins in Vermont.
Miller, who gave birth to Isabella during the civil union, defied court orders granting Jenkins visitation and left the country shortly before a court shifted custody to Jenkins, Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Van de Graaf said.
Zodhiates will be sentenced on January 30th and faces eight years in prison.
Earlier this year Pastor Kenneth Miller (no relation) was sentenced to 27 months in prison after losing his appeal. The whereabouts of Isabella Miller-Jenkins remains unknown.
RELATED: On the same day in 2012 that Kenneth Miller was found guilty of abetting the kidnapping of Isabella to Nicaragua, lesbian mom Janet Jenkins filed a RICO lawsuit against many of the parties suspected of conspiring in the crime, including Liberty University, the parent of the vile anti-gay hate group Liberty Counsel, whose president Mat Staver was specifically named in the suit. In July 2015 the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a lower court’s ruling that Liberty University’s liability insurance policy covers such lawsuits. In 2012 American Family Association radio host Bryan Fischer called for the creation of an “underground railroad” to aid Christians who kidnap the children of gay parents.

Trump ‘Fired’ Unattractive Waitresses

Donald Trump ordered waitresses at the Trump National Golf Club in California’s Rancho Palos Verdes to be fired if he did not deem them attractive enough, according to an investigation by the Los Angeles Times. When Trump was visiting the course, managers said they felt they needed to schedule only young, thin, pretty women to work those shifts. According to court records, Trump wanted any unattractive women who worked at his club to be fired. He wanted to employ only beautiful women, according to former club staffers. “I had witnessed Donald Trump tell managers many times while he was visiting the club that restaurant hostesses were ‘not pretty enough’ and that they should be fired and replaced with more attractive women,” said Hayley Strozier, who was director of catering at the club until 2008. The comment was made in a sworn declaration during the course of a lawsuit that focused on the rigorous working environment at the club. The Los Angeles Times story on the documents includes several examples of various inappropriate comments Trump made to the employees who he believed were attractive.

Report: Trump Violated U.S.-Cuba Embargo

Donald Trump’s company officials were secretly doing business in Cuba during the U.S. embargo against the communist island-nation, according to a Newsweek report. An article by reporter Kurt Eichenwald posted early Thursday, citing documents he obtained, says Trump employees visited Havana during Fidel Castro’s presidency and, despite the clear violation of federal law, spent at least $68,000 in the country in 1998 without U.S. government permission. Eichenwald’s report is based on court filings, company records, and interviews with former Trump executives. According to Eichenwald, the company funneled the money to Cuba through a U.S. consulting firm—with Trump’s knowledge—in order to make the trip’s spending appear legal.

Four Medieval Texts for Michaelmas

Four Medieval Texts for Michaelmas

BL Harley 624, f. 134v (Canterbury, 12th century)

Today is Michaelmas, the golden autumn feast of St Michael and All Angels - the 'high-angel's tide in harvest', as the Old English Menologium calls it.

Hwæt, we weorðiað wide geond eorðan
heahengles tiid on hærfeste,
Michaheles, swa þæt menigo wat,
fif nihtum ufor... emnihtes dæg.

Lo, we honour widely throughout the earth
the high-angel's tide in harvest,
Michael, as the multitude know,
five nights after the equinox day.

St Michael, dragon-slayer, guardian of humanity and weigher of souls, was immensely popular in the medieval period, and in this post are four pieces about St Michael by medieval English writers: a Latin sequence by the eighth-century Northumbrian scholar Alcuin; an English homily from c.990 by Ælfric; a prayer in verse by John Lydgate (c.1370–c.1451); and a homily by John Mirk (fl. c.1382–c.1414). Illustrations are from English manuscripts in the British Library and from some churches I've recently visited.

BL Arundel 91, f. 26v
(Canterbury, 12th-century; compare a Victorian rendering of the same.)

Michael, Archangel
Of the King of Kings,
Give ear to our voices.

We acknowledge thee to be the Prince of the citizens of heaven:
And at thy prayer God sends
His angels unto men,

That the enemy with cunning craft shall not prevail
To do the hurt he craves
To weary men.
Yea, thou hast the dominion of perpetual Paradise,
And ever do the holy angels honour thee.

Thou wert seen in the Temple of God,
A censer of gold in thy hands,
And the smoke of it fragrant with spices
Rose up till it came before God.

Thou with strong hand didst smite the cruel dragon,
And many souls didst rescue from his jaws.
Then was there a great silence in heaven,
And a thousand thousand saying "Glory to the Lord King."

Hear us, Michael,
Greatest angel,
Come down a little
From thy high seat,
To bring us the strength of God,
And the lightening of His mercy.

And do thou, Gabriel,
Lay low our foes,
And thou, Raphael,
Heal our sick,
Purge our disease, ease thou our pain,
And give us to share
In the joys of the blessed.

- Alcuin, Sequence for St Michael (translated by Helen Waddell, Medieval Latin Lyrics (New York, 1948), pp.91-3; the Latin text can be found here.)

Royal 1 B XI, f. 6 (Canterbury, 12th century)

"I say unto you that their angels ever behold the face of my Father who is in heaven." By these words it is shown that an angel is appointed for every believer as a guardian, who shields him against the devil’s plotting and supports him in holy virtues. As the Psalmist says of every righteous person: "God commanded his angels about you, that they should hold you and bear you in their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone." It is a great honour for Christians that each person, from birth, has an angel assigned to him as a guardian. Just so it is written of the Apostle Peter that the angel led him out of prison and he came to his companions and asked for entrance, knocking, and the faithful ones said, "It is not Peter who is knocking, it is his angel."

Truly, the angels whom God has appointed as guardians for his chosen never leave his presence, because God is everywhere, and wherever the angels fly they are ever in his presence, and enjoy his glory. They take news of our words and deeds to the Almighty, although to him nothing is hidden; as the Archangel Raphael said to the man of God, Tobias, "When you prayed, I offered your prayers before God."

The Old Testament tells us that archangels are set over every nation, above the other angels, so that they may protect the peoples, as Moses, in the fifth book of the Old Testament, reveals in these words: "When the high God separated and scattered the offspring of Adam, he set the boundaries of the peoples according to the numbers of his angels". The prophet Daniel agrees with this in his prophecy: a certain angel of God spoke to Daniel concerning the archangel who guided the Persians, and said, "The archangel came to me, the leader of the Greek people, and none was my helper but Michael, leader of the Hebrews. Even now Michael, one of the foremost of the leaders, came to support me, and I remained there with the king of the Persians." With these words, when he said that Michael came to help him, it is shown what great care the archangels take in their authority over mankind.

Now it is to be believed that the archangel Michael has care of Christian people, who was the leader of the Hebrew people while they believed in God; and that he manifested himself when he built himself a church among a faithful people on the mount Gargano, as we read before. It is arranged by God’s dispensation that the glorious angel of heaven is continually the helper of Christians on earth and their advocate in heaven before Almighty God, who lives and reigns for ever in eternity. Amen.

Michael presenting souls to God in Lansdowne 383, f. 168v (Shaftesbury, 12th century)

Here Michael weighs the soul of a dying man, as devils try to seize it and the Virgin intercedes on its behalf (Yates Thompson 13, f. 151):

In this 'Doom' painting at Wenhaston in Suffolk, Michael weighs a soul against its little evil deeds:

O Myghell! by grace of Cryst Iesu
Callid among angelis þe hevenly champioun,
Be a prerogatyf synguler of vertu,
Held a batayll, venquysshed the dragoun,
Be thow our sheld and our proteccyoun
In euery myschef of daungeris infernall,
Dyffende our party, presente our orisoun,
Vp to the lord that gouerneth all.

- John Lydgate (from here)

Stowe 12, f. 305 (Norwich, 14th century)

That is:

O Michael, by grace of Christ Jesu
Called among angels the heavenly champion,
[Who] by a special property of virtue
Held a battle, vanquished the dragon,
Be thou our shield and our protection
In every trouble of dangers infernal,
Defend our cause, present our prayer
Unto the Lord who governeth all.

- John Mirk (from here)

St Winnow, Cornwall

Good men and women, on such a day you should keep St Michael's Day, God's holy archangel; on this day you should come to church and worship God and this holy archangel. You should know that holy church on that day makes mention of all God's holy angels, for the great help and service that mankind has from them; but especially it keeps the memory of St Michael, because of the particular powers that he has above all others, for he is wonderful in appearing, he is marvellous in miracle-working, and victorious in his fighting...

He guards paradise, and receives the souls which are sent thither. He shall slay the Antichrist on the mount of Olivet.  He shall bid all the dead to rise on the day of doom, and he shall bring to the doom the Cross of Christ, the nails, the spear, the crown of thorns, and all other instruments of his Passion...

So you should all kneel down, and pray to Saint Michael that he may appear to you when you pass out of this world, and defend you from your enemies, and bring you to the joy of paradise. Amen.

How reliable is America's nuclear defense?

The ‘nuclear triad’ — basically how America defends itself against nuclear attack — is out of date. U.S. nuclear modernization efforts are 20 years behind the Chinese and Russian programs, according to a former U.S. official, who blames the delay on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. How reliable and safe will the United States’ most dangerous weapons be if action isn’t taken soon?

Nursing homes have long blocked abuse and harassment claims from reaching courts. A major new federal rule puts a stop to that.

The federal agency that controls billions of dollars in Medicaid and Medicaid funding has moved to prevent nursing homes from forcing claims of elder abuse, sexual harassment and even wrongful death into the private system of justice known as arbitration.
The agency, the Department of Health and Human Services, on Wednesday issued a rule that bars any nursing home or assisted-living facility that receives federal funding from inserting an arbitration clause into its contracts.
The rule, which would affect 1.5 million nursing home residents, promises to deliver major new protections.

Canadian professor libelously targeted as “anti-semite” in coordinated attack

Canadian professor libelously targeted as “anti-semite” in coordinated attack

By Rafiq | American Herald Tribune | September 28, 2016
In his Now Magazine article “Facebook Removes Anti-Semitic Post after Online Blowback,” Bernie Farber explains that “the Facebook ravings on the social media site of Anthony Hall,” a tenured professor at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, have been identified as anti-Semitic. This statement might lead readers to believe that there were anti-Semitic ravings by Dr. Hall on his Facebook page, but as the article makes clear, there are no examples of such ravings by Dr. Hall, only by “one Glen Davidson,” who we are told posted these ravings on Dr. Hall’s page.
Farber goes on to state that Dr. Hall “has publicly embraced the ridiculous and obnoxious notions of Gerard Menuhin, who has purported to have proof that the Holocaust is a myth.” Farber does not attempt to dismiss any of this proof, as one might expect an objective journalist to do, but instead takes the position that such proof can be dismissed out of hand as false without any investigation.
By comparison, Dr. Hall sounds like the more reasonable person for having actually looked at Menuhin’s book Tell the Truth and Shame the Devil. Note, too, that when Hall says “I’m reading that text and having to reassess a lot of ideas,” he does not say that he has changed his ideas, only that he is reassessing his ideas. Again, Hall sounds like the more courageous thinker for his willingness to reassess his thinking on a narrative as seemingly sacrosanct as the Jewish holocaust.
Having not yet said anything that convinces me Dr. Hall is an anti-Semite, Farber adds, “Hall reportedly linked Israel’s intelligence service, Mossad, with 9/11.” The role of Mossad, along with the CIA, in the 9/11 attacks is a fact well documented by credible journalists and scholars and widely disseminated online and in books. It is public knowledge and in the public domain. To admit the role of Mossad and the CIA in 9/11 is to admit the villainy of national governments and their foreign policies. Jewish identity and anti-Semitism have nothing to do with it.
Regarding  the anti-Semitic Facebook post that did not even originate with Dr. Hall, Farber writes, “To the best of my knowledge, Hall was never moved to delete this post himself.” An unbiased journalist would have contacted Dr. Hall and asked him about this matter. Well, I did contact Dr. Hall, and he informed me that he didn’t even know that the post was up on the “wall” of his Facebook page until after it had been taken down and after he had learned of the resulting controversy. So, here again, Farber offers no proof that Dr. Hall is even remotely anti-Semitic.
Not only that, but Dr. Hall’s award-winning two-volume book The Bowl with One Spoon, published by respected arbiter of scholarly history McGill-Queen’s University Press, gives every indication that Dr. Hall is the opposite of a racist, particularly in light of his deep commitment to exposing the plight of Indigenous peoples. Indeed, renowned Canadian scholar Naomi Klein, who happens to be Jewish, doesn’t seem to think that Dr. Hall is a racist either. On the cover of Dr. Hall’s book, she writes, “I cannot overstate the importance of this book. If used properly, it could change the world.”
Nonetheless, Farber goes on to bemoan that “the combined efforts of B’nai B’rith Canada and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs were unable to move the University of Lethbridge to take action against Hall.” I would like to believe that this unwillingness on the part of the University of Lethbridge to help B’nai B’rith destroy Dr. Hall’s career is due to the university’s professed commitment to liberal education and liberal values, even if Farber does portray Lethbridge as a racist backwater in conservative Alberta, where Hall is said to have “found a comfortable home amongst Holocaust deniers.”
I would like to believe that the unwillingness of the University of Lethbridge to help B’nai B’rith destroy Dr. Hall’s career is due to the fact that, as a nation, Canada has shown itself willing to reconsider history when there is good cause. Notably, Canadians have recently begun the hard process of re-evaluating our own history with respect to our nation’s cultural and physical genocide against our Indigenous peoples. Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Indian Residential Schools has just published a six-volume final report on its findings, and in the tradition of scholars like Dr. Hall, this report shows fearlessness in confronting past lies so that history can better reflect the truth, however uncomfortable that truth may be.
I would like to believe that the unwillingness of the University of Lethbridge to help B’nai B’rith destroy Dr. Hall’s career is due to the university’s high ideals and Canadian bearing, but when I contacted Dr. Hall, he informed me that the University of Lethbridge has indeed asked him to step down from his tenured position after twenty-six years as a professor. It seems that the university is ready to bow to outside pressure and to sacrifice Dr. Hall. I’m sure that Farber’s biased account of the anti-Semitic posting on Dr. Hall’s Facebook page did little to help Dr. Hall’s chances of staving off B’nai B’rith’s attack.
Farber’s misrepresentation of Dr. Hall is no less offensive than the crime of which Dr. Hall is accused, namely misrepresentation of the Jewish holocaust. The difference between the two is that, in the case of Farber, his accusation that Dr. Hall is an anti-Semite is clearly baseless, whereas Dr. Hall’s willingness “to reassess a lot of ideas” about the history of the Second World War seems to be well thought out given his reputation as a respected historian.

A sweeping bipartisan majority in the Senate rejected President Obama’s veto of legislation that would allow families of those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to sue Saudi Arabia for any role in the plot, all but assuring that Mr. Obama would suffer the first override vote of his presidency.
The vote was 97 to 1, with only Senator Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, siding with the president.

Space Declared LGBTQ Friendly as Pride Flag is Sent 21.1 Miles Over Earth

Space Declared LGBTQ Friendly as Pride Flag is Sent 21.1 Miles Over Earth: WATCH

The global nonprofit organization Planting Peace just sent a Pride flag into space for the first time, to make a point:
On August 17, Planting Peace sent the first pride flag into space, and in doing so, declared space LGBTQ friendly. The primary purpose of this declaration is to support the ongoing fight for the fundamental human rights of our LGBTQ family, moving us closer to a universal understanding that all people deserve to live freely and love freely without fear and discrimination.
To achieve this, we used a high altitude balloon with a GoPro attached, and launched just outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The pride flag was airborne for just over three hours before making its way back to earth. At its peak altitude, the flag soared 21.1 miles above the earth’s surface.
Our hope was to create the largest safe SPACE possible for our LGBTQ community. It also offered us a chance to reinforce, in a peaceful, beautiful way, our ongoing message to our LGBTQ family:
You are loved, valued and beautiful.
There is nothing wrong with you.
You are not alone, and we will stand with you.
Now if Elon Musk could just get us to Mars.

Afghans Learned the Art of Torturing Their Prisoners From the West

Afghans Learned the Art of Torturing Their Prisoners From the West

Sputnik – 27.09.2016
There were 77 cases of prisoner torture registered in Afghan jails last year, almost 10 times more than in 2000, a local human rights commission announced in a report.
According to the report, inmates were being tortured in Kunduz, Baglan, Nangarhar, Kandahar and Herat – provinces controlled by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
The torturers went unpunished
In an interview with Sputnik, Sima Samar, Afghanistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission chief, said that none of those responsible for mistreating prisoners have so far been brought to justice.
“Our commission has registered multiple instances of excesses committed by Interior and National Security Ministry officials working in state penitentiaries. We condemn this practice and hope that such inhuman and anti-Islamic actions will never happen again,” Sima Samar said.
She added that a thorough investigation by state and security officials was the only way to of improving the situation.
Taliban supporters tortured
According to the report, people suspected of involvement in terrorist attacks and of links to the Taliban were tortured until they started making confessions.
Inmates were subjected to various kinds of physical abuse from beatings and electric shocks to being beaten with canes, sticks, rifle butts and whips. Many were also forced to stand for hours on end.
Are all those tortured really guilty?
Judging from the report, however, almost 300 people across Afghanistan were sentenced either by mistake or without any solid proof of their guilt.
These people are the type who could have been subjected to torture.
The report also mentioned hundreds of prisoners who went missing in 2015, adding that the past few years have seen a steady rise in the number of such “disappearances.”

European Council refuses to submit requested documents to EU parliament

The European Parliament’s Budgetary Control Committee on September 26 voted to refuse discharge for the European Council, following a recommendation tabled by Ryszard Czarnecki, vice-president of the European Parliament.
Czarnecki, who is also the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group Coordinator in the budgetary committee, warned that the decision was caused by repeated difficulties in the discharge procedure and lack of cooperation of the Council.
A plenary vote is slated to take place at the end of next month.
According to an ECR press release, Czarnecki’s report points out a lack of cooperation from the European Council and Council which did not provide the Parliament with their annual activity report. Hence, the ECR Group Coordinator underlines that Parliament refused to grant discharge to the Secretary-General of the Council in relation to the financial years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 and postponed its decision on granting the Secretary-General of the Council discharge in relation to the financial year 2014.
“Council’s failure to submit the requested documents to Parliament above all undermines the right of citizens of the Union to information and transparency and is becoming a cause for concern, reflecting as it does a certain democratic deficit within the Union institutions,” said Czarnecki.
He also stressed that the Council’s expenditure must be scrutinised in the same way as that of other institutions.
“A lack of cooperation by the European Council and the Council with the discharge authority is a negative signal to the citizens of the Union,” said Czarnecki.

The missile that shot down a passenger jet over Ukraine in 2014 was trucked in from Russia, investigators found. 298 people died

The missile that shot down a passenger jet over Ukraine in 2014 was trucked in from Russia, investigators found. 298 people died.

A Dutch-led investigation has concluded that the powerful surface-to-air missile system that was used to shoot down a Malaysia Airlines plane over Ukraine two years ago, killing all 298 on board, was trucked in from Russia at the request of Russian-backed separatists and returned to Russia the same night.
The report largely confirmed the already widely documented Russian government role not only in the deployment of the missile system, called a Buk, or SA-11, but the subsequent cover up, which continues to this day.

New York launches campaign to fight Islamophobia

New York launches campaign to fight Islamophobia

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2016 11:26 PM GMT
New York unveiled Monday a major public campaign to fight Islamophobia, stressing the equal rights of the city's hundreds of thousands of Muslims.
The campaign -- launched in the wake of a Manhattan bomb attack blamed on a radicalized Afghan-American -- initially will use social media to spread the message under the hashtag #IAmMuslimNYC.
"Now more than ever, it is important for every New Yorker to stand united as one city and reject hate and violence," said Mayor Bill de Blasio in a statement.
"We will not tolerate discrimination or violence of any kind and we will not rest until all New Yorkers, including our Muslim brothers and sisters, are treated with the dignity they deserve."
The campaign begins Tuesday, just 10 days after bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami exploded a device in Chelsea, a fashionable Manhattan neighborhood, injuring 29 people.
Investigators say a handwritten manual recovered after his arrest lauded Al-Qaeda leaders including Osama bin Laden, and criticized US wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.
New York's campaign comes amid growing fears among the country's Muslims of a backlash over jihadist attacks, both in the United States and abroad, in the context of the anti-Muslim rhetoric embraced by Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump.
Among the recent acts violence against Muslims in New York was the August fatal shooting of an imam and his assistant, execution-style, near their mosque in the borough of Queens.
New York is planning workshops beginning next month to give city employees and public and private employers a better understanding of Islam.
A marketing campaign using all media is in the works for around mid-2017 -- when de Blasio's reelection campaign should be in full swing.
Since his first campaign in 2013, the New York mayor has promoted a multiracial and inclusive approach.
Before his election, he promised two school days off for Muslim holidays, on a par with Christian and Jewish holidays. That pledge has been in force since the start of the school year in 2015.
