"Founding father" of modern LGBT movement dies
Dr. Frank Kameny, a World War II veteran who helped launch the modern gay rights movement after he was fired from his federal government job in 1957, passed away this week at the age of 86. Kameny's activism preceded the Stonewall riots by nearly a decade, and Harvey Milk's election by almost two decades. His papers and other material documenting the nascent LGBT movement are now displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. "We mourn the loss of a hero and a founding father of the fight to end discrimination against LGBT people," said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.
