How Portugal passed a marriage equality law
How Portugal passed a marriage equality law
New York Times columnist Frank Bruni traveled to Portugal to find out how a small, largely Roman Catholic country came to legalize marriage for same-sex couples, even as it still forbids those couples from adopting children. Among the reasons he discovered: a desire to be seen as advanced like its neighbor Spain; and the support of politicians who understood the issue wouldn't break their careers. The country has now moved on, and support for marriage equality has jumped since the law's enactment -- a development one former member of parliament called "a good example of the pedagogical effect of law."
