A
teen committed suicide last month after school administrators reportedly
harassed and outed the teenager.
Sergio
Urrego, 16, killed himself in August after school administrators made his
relationship with another young man public and accused him of sexual
harassment, The Gaily Grind reports.
Urrego’s
mother, Alba Reyes, has come forward about her son’s suicide in order to clear
his name.
The
relationship was discovered when a teacher at Gimnasio Castillo Campestre school
in Bogotá saw a photo of her son kissing his boyfriend on his phone. He
confiscated the phone and sent the two boys to the school psychologist.
His
boyfriend of a month and a half was then forced to tell his parents about his
sexuality and was taken out of the school.
The
school reportedly blocked Urrego’s requests to transfer to another school and
refused to release his grades and transcripts.
After
continuous visits to the psychologist, multiple class suspensions and
accusations of being an “anarchist,” “atheist,” and “homosexual,” Urrego jumped
from the Titán Plaza shopping center on August 4. He died three hours later at a
local hospital.
“My
sexuality is not my sin, it’s my own paradise,” Urrego wrote on his Facebook
page before taking his life.
On
the day of his suicide, Urrego posted the lyrics to Pink Floyd’s “Goodbye Cruel
World” on Facebook:
Goodbye cruel worldI’m leaving you todayGoodbyeGoodbyeGoodbyeGoodbye all you peopleThere’s nothing you can sayTo make me changeMy mindGoodbye.
Reyes
says Gimnasio Castillo Campestre, a Catholic institution, handled the situation
in a deplorable manner. With the support of LGBT group Colombia Diversa, she is
filing a complaint against the school and those involved, according to GLAAD.
