Medical cannabis in the IDF Channel 2 News
The IDF decided to allow reserve duty soldiers who own a Health
Ministry prescription for medical cannabis to smoke during their reserve
duty. Nonetheless, the IDF are still examining the practice manner of
the instruction; whether the soldiers will be allowed to smoke inside
the base limits and whether they will be requested to smoke only in the
absence of additional soldiers.
The medical cannabis debate has reached the
IDF: the military will allow reserve duty soldiers who regularly use
medical cannabis with a license from the Health Ministry to smoke during
their reserve duty.
There are some 20 thousand medical cannabis users in Israel who own a Health Ministry license, and estimations suggest that at least several hundreds of them are still actively serving in reserve units. The smoking-while-in-service issue has been broadly discussed recently in the "Cannabis" website.
In response to Channel 2 News' question the IDF reported: "Medical cannabis is used for medical treatment for diverse illnesses in accordance with the civil system administration. The military profile and the release from reserve duty are determined by the medical condition, and not by the cannabis consumption. In these days the IDF are examining the medical cannabis usage manner of IDF soldiers".
The answer provided by the IDF does not refer only to reservists but also to regular-service soldiers; however at this stage there remain a number of questions open which concern the restrictions that may be bestowed upon smoking while in service. It remains unclear whether the prescription smokers will be allowed to smoke inside the base or only outside, whether they will be able to smoke in the presence of other soldiers or only on their own and whether they will be authorized to smoke during operational activity.
