Photo of the Week: Before his demolished home

A young Palestinian man cries in front of his home in the northern town of Beit Hanoun after it was destroyed by Israeli air strikes. His home was among the nearly 18,000 destroyed by Israel during a fifty-day assault on the Gaza Strip that began on July 8, 2014.
What has become of this man and his family? What will become of his future? What will carry him through the expected ten years of rebuilding that Gaza faces? Where will he eat? Where will he sleep? Whose graves will he visit, and to where will he return after praying for those he has lost?
Despite the sheer uncertainty of his future, this man is vibrant and colorful where everything else is grey. He is envied by his soot-covered surroundings almost as much as he is feared and loathed by the soldiers who tried to take his life away. Even though he livens the frame with color, his despair is something we are all responsible for. You can’t unsee this picture.
