Holy city becomes mini-police state

Holy city becomes mini-police state

Most of the violence over the past month has taken place in and around Jerusalem. With no organization to blame and no leader to strike at, the Israeli government's response has been to punish the entire Palestinian population of Jerusalem.

Dahlia Scheindlin took a trip to Jabel Mukaber this week and found an East Jerusalem neighborhood surrounded by checkpoints and residential streets full of combat-ready police and soldiers.

Israel has been erecting new walls and concrete barriers around East Jerusalem’s neighborhoods, and Netanyahu is even discussing booting Palestinian residents from the “united” city — pushing them into the West Bank.

“Ir Amim” director Yehudit Oppenheimer warns that the new walls are destroying the possibility of a political resolution, turn Jews and Palestinians alike into prisoners.

The biggest story of the week, however, was Benjamin Netanyahu absolving Hitler for the Holocaust, momentarily shifting the blame onto an early 20th century Palestinian leader.

Social media went wild in response, but Noam Sheizaf explains just how dangerous, vilifying and full of incitement Netanyahu’s statement really was.
