High court sides with employee fired for smoking pot on the job

A Connecticut state worker fired after he was caught smoking marijuana on the job was punished too harshly and should get his job back, the state Supreme Court has ruled. State officials said firing Gregory Linhoff from his maintenance job at a state university was the only appropriate penalty. An arbitrator disagreed and overturned the firing, offering an alternative course of discipline. Many appeals and legal opinions about the arbitrator's decision ensued on the way to the state's highest court.
