The Union of Islamic Communities and Organisations in Italy is calling for polygamy to be legalised. The group’s founder is arguing that polygamy should be considered a civil right, just like same-sex partnerships.
As reported by Breitbart London, the organisation’s founder and president, Hamza Piccardo, posted on Facebook the following message: “When it comes to civil rights here, then polygamy is a civil right. Muslims do not agree with homosexual partnerships, and yet they have to accept a system that allows it. There is no reason why Italy should not accept polygamous marriages of consenting persons.”
But Debora Serracchiani, deputy chairman of the ruling Democratic Party (PD), disagrees. She said: “Centuries of fighting for women’s rights cannot simply be brushed aside. Polygamy has nothing to do with civil rights”.
In response to the criticism, Piccardo suggested polygamy would boost the nation’s economy. He said: “Do not underestimate the demographic action of polygamy. It would rebalance population decline and the consequent need for foreign labour”.
In related news Russia’s global news network RT reported that Piccardo’s statements caused uproar in Italy, a mainly Catholic country which still remains divided on the issue of civil unions.
In May, Italian lawmakers voted in favour of allowing civil unions between people of the same sex, despite strong pressure from the Catholic Church. Now same-sex couples enjoy many of the rights of marriage, except for the right to adopt children.
