UK man tried to rape woman to ‘cure’ her of being gay
Gay woman said in court she was 'totally humiliated' by the sexual assault she allegedly suffered that dislocated her hip
A British man tried to rape a woman to ‘cure’ her of being gay, a jury was told.
Ronald Paton, 50, is accused of hurling homophobic abuse at the 63-year-old woman before trying to sexually assault her – and dislocating her hip in the process.
Gloucester Crown Court heard how the man knocked on the victim’s door, invited her in for a drink, and then attacked her.
Prosecutor Kerry Barker said: ‘Same-sex marriages have just become legal but there are still some men who think that being gay is an illness and that if a gay person has sex with a member of the opposite sex they will be cured.’
He said the woman felt ‘totally humiliated’ by the attack.
Taking the stand, the 63-year-old woman said the man had given the impression he wanted to heal a rift that existed between the two neighbors.
‘As the evening continued, he became quite drunk and I felt uneasy with the way the conversation was going,’ she said.
‘I went to the toilet and when I returned he brushed past me and I noticed that he had turned the main lights off in the lounge.
‘I suddenly realised that nobody knew where I was so I phoned my son, but Ronald told me that I would regret that.’
She added that he put his hands underneath her bra and pushed them up to her chin.
‘I was shocked and tried to push him away. I said “stop it, don't touch me.”
She said he pulled her shorts and underwear off and tried to rape her before sexually assaulting her as she tried to push him away.
‘He became violent and very angry, but I pulled my shorts up and left as fast as I could and locked myself in the bathroom of my home,’ the alleged victim added.
When he was arrested, he said: ‘I can’t believe this, she is a dyke.’
Paton denies attempting to rape and sexually assaulting the gay woman.
The case continues.
