Haunting stories and photos reveal horror of life inside a Victorian asylum

The woman who thought she was 'queen of heaven', the pensioner who jumped in a canal and a boy called 'broken window': Haunting stories and photos reveal horror of life inside a Victorian asylum

records
The records, currently being held in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, detail hundreds of former patients of the Stanley Royd Hospital - part of the West Riding Pauper Asylum (inset). Medical details and photographs of thousands of patients are included in the collection- including Ann Humphreys (left) who was admitted age 53 after jumping in to a canal, and schoolboy Alfred Todd (right) who thought his name was 'broken window'. The records have been added to the National Register of Documentary Heritage - an online programme run by UNESCO to promote the UK's heritage across the world.
