Appearing this week on FRC's Washington
Watch radio show, Austin Nimocks of the Christian conservative
legal group Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) warned that gay marriage
foes may soon be “put in jail.”
The ADF is currently representing
Barronelle Stutzman, owner of Arlene's Flowers, who last year refused
to supply flowers for a gay couple's wedding. The state of
Washington asserts that in denying the couple service Stutzman
violated the state's Consumer Protection Act.
“When it comes to running a business
you cannot discriminate against someone based on their religion,
based on their race, based on their age, or in this case, based on
their sexual orientation,” said state Attorney General Bob
Ferguson. “And unfortunately, that's what [Stutzman] did here.”
“[T]he persecution,” Nimocks told
guest host Josh Duggar, “is only going to ramp up and it's going to
become more fierce.”
“We appreciate so many of those who
are willing to stand for marriage in the face of brutal opposition
and public excoriation,” Nimocks
added. “I don’t think we're far away from a day where we
might see somebody being persecuted to the point of being put in jail
for standing for marriage.”
The state's lawsuit seeks fines against
the business, while a second suit seeks damages on behalf of the gay
couple.
