12
hours after a tape of the diseased Rabbi Ovadia Yosef has been
released, mutual accusations from both political camps threaten to
inflame the orthodox party. Beneath the surface, a battle has been
engaged between Deri and Yishai about the source of the tape.
However, Shas has not published an official statement concerning the recent incident.
In
addition, Shas’s officials who spoke with Channel 2 news reams out for
the publication of the controversial footage, saying the incident is
disgracing the Rabbi and claiming to have more recording of the revered
spiritual leader Rabbi Ovdia Yosef.
In
a tape that was publicized yesterday, six years after the Rabbi was
filmed, the diseased spiritual leader of Shas performs slamming Deri for
returning to politics and explaining why he will never betray Yishai.
At
the end of 2008 Eli Yishai was the chairman of Shas and Deri was about
to return to the orthodox party whom he left after he was implicated in a
corruption scandal and served two years in prison.
In
a conversation with his family members, held six years ago, Yosef
explained why he will not let Deri to return: “why shall we take a
thief? Why shall we take a corrupted politician” asked the Rabbi, “30-40
percent of our voters will never stick with us in this consition” he
added.
“No one has anything against Yishai” said Yosef in attempt to show his trust with the functioning chairman of the party.
Yosef
also caught saying in one of the parts of the tape that he won’t block
Deri’s way if the latter will consider establishing independent party:
“what do I care? He can do whatever he wants, he is independent. He will
gain nothing out of it, even 5,000 (voters) he would not attract, and
even if he passes the threshold, so be it, I cannot betray Eli Yishai.”
Since
the recall, Deri has received the keys the party leadership while Eli
Yishai ended up as his deput. From that point on, a publicized rivalry
developed between the two.
3 weeks ago Yishai announced that he had decided to resign from Shas and establish an independent party.
Aryeh
Deri the current chairman of the party said in response that “the
public is looking nowadays for unity, how can one man who considers
himself as loyal publish this kind of tape, who reveals our Rabbi as a
subversive?”
