Jibril al-Bakri told Ma'an that the step was taken as car lanes were expanded and a passage for pedestrians was added.
"Israel is ignoring all agreements concerning the checkpoint, as all talks were geared towards removing the checkpoint. We were surprised it is being improved and we do not know what is next."
"These developments are part of Israel's plan to isolate Bethlehem and the southern West Bank from other areas," he added.
The checkpoint exists solely for political reasons and has no grounding in security necessities, he said.
The container checkpoint, located in Wad Nar, is permanently manned and controls the flow of traffic between the southern and northern West Bank.
When closed, the checkpoint effectively separates the northern and southern districts of the occupied West Bank.
