Lawyer for inmates on hunger strike is banned from all California prisons

A prominent lawyer known for her representation of inmates has been banned from all California prisons.

In a Tuesday letter, a state corrections official prohibited Marilyn McMahon from visiting all state prisons, citing a probe of a claimed “threat” created by a retired paralegal who had been working for her as a volunteer. McMahon, who is executive director of California Prison Focus and has been working with inmates currently on a hunger strike, called the ban "an outrage," reports the PolitiCal page of the Los Angeles Times (sub. req.).

"I am a target because I do help them communicate with the outside world," McMahon told the newspaper.

She was one of two civil rights lawyers banned from prisons during 2011 hunger strikes, the Times says. There was no actual finding of wrongdoing and eventually the bans were lifted.
