Anti-gay Republican who crashed into boat full of children arrested for dangerous driving
An anti-gay Maryland Republican who claimed gays
were a threat to children and then crashed his boat into a boat full of
children has been arrested for drunk and dangerous driving just under a
year later
The anti-gay Republican Maryland state lawmaker who injured four
children in a drunken boating accident on 22 August of last year has
been arrested while drunk and behind the wheel of an unlicensed motor
vehicle almost a year later to the date.
Tea Party Republican Don Dwyer crashed his boat into a smaller vessel carrying five children and two adults on the Magothy River in late August last year, and on 20 August this year was arrested by officers with the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
According to a police report that GSN has seen, Dwyer was drunk and driving so dangerously that a passing police vehicle that was transporting a prisoner thought he was such a threat to public safety that he couldn’t just call another police car in to handle it.
‘Officer Moorhouse concluded that although he was transporting a prisoner when he observed the vehicle … commit numerous traffic violations in a short period of time that posed an immediate safety risk for all other drivers … he felt that the violations were serious enough that a traffic stop needed to be made to prevent possible injury to the driver of the vehicle and/or other drivers on the roadway,’ the police report reads.
When stopped Dwyer claimed to police that he had only had two beers that evening.
‘While speaking with Dwyer I noticed that his eyes were red and glossy and his face was flushed. Dwyer’s speech was also very slow and slurred,’ the arresting officer wrote in his report.
He was then asked to perform a series of sobriety tests – which he failed.
When his car registration was checked it was found to be expired and suspended.
The charges against Dwyer include driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving, displaying expired and suspended registration, and driving 70 miles-per-hour in a 55 zone.
Dwyer blamed his 2012 drunken boating incident on pressures at home and work and his feeling of being betrayed by colleagues who had allowed same-sex marriage to be passed in his state.
Dwyer had repeatedly tried to impede or ban same-sex marriage in Maryland and had suggested that same-sex marriage would lead to homosexuality being taught in schools.
Dwyer plead guilty to the 2012 incident earlier this month but he is yet to be asked to stand down by his Republican colleagues over either incident.
