Arson attack on Toowoomba mosque, Australia

Posted: 16 Apr 2015 02:54 PM PDT
Fire has seriously damaged a mosque in Toowoomba on Queensland’s Darling Downs.
The blaze broke out just before 2:00am (AEST) inside the brick building in West Street in Toowoomba.
Firefighters managed to put it out but it caused significant damage.
Police are treating it as an arson attack and have begun doorknocking homes in the area.
Scenes of crime and forensic police officers are at the scene.
It is the second such attack on the mosque this year.
In January, a man tried to light a fire in a plastic bin and then deliberately left a gas stove on in a building adjoining the mosque, but it failed to ignite.
No arrests were made over that incident.
Security and police patrols had been stepped up at the mosque over the last six months and worshippers have been warned to be careful in the area.
Islamic Council of Queensland president Ismail Cajee has condemned the attack on the Toowoomba mosque.
“Whoever has done it is totally illiterate and absolutely uneducated,” he said.
