4 Ridiculous Things People Said God Was Responsible For
God is an all powerful,
omnipresent being, I was always told during my Sunday school days. I’ve
heard God invoked at awards ceremonies, praised by sports teams for
championship titles, thanked by politicians for victories and once again
turned to when those same politicians are rocked by scandal.
In the view of these people, God is a very busy being, it seems. And, according to these very, very devout followers, God just keeps getting busier. Here are four events that some ultra-religious Christian followers believe God is actively participating in…for better or for worse.
1) The California drought
Lawns wither, crops are dying, and *gasp* even the rich are being asked to curb their usage as the California drought reaches crisis proportions. But why is there even a drought in the first place? Well, if you ask California Assemblywoman Shannon Grove, the Republican will tell you that it’s God’s wrath over abortion being legal. “Texas was in a long period of drought until Governor Perry signed the fetal pain bill,” she said to a pro-life banquet audience. “It rained that night. Now God has his hold on California.” When asked to clarify her remarks, she said in a Facebook comment that, “I believe — and most Americans believe — that God’s hand is in the affairs of man, and certainly was in the formation of this country. Is this drought caused by God? Nobody knows. But biblical history shows a consequence to man’s actions.”
2) Making women sad that they aren’t men
Conservative pundit Glenn Beck can be puzzling at his best. But recently he and a guest
became even more indecipherable as they tried to explain menstruation
as being a reminder to women that they don’t have the endless
child-creating capacity of their male counterparts. “… [T]he good Lord
created men with an infinite capacity to produce seed at almost any age
whereas he chose to create women with an absolute finite limited number
of eggs,” explains Beck’s guest, who is a Rabbi. “And so the loss of an
egg every month, for any sensitive woman, is sad because it’s one less
opportunity for life.” Beck responds by calling it a “God-given
sadness,” because apparently God doesn’t have enough on his plate, and
has decided to throw creating monthly misery for half the population
onto the to-do list as well.
3) Stopping crime in Mississippi
Ever wonder why some cities have higher crime rates than others? No, it has little to do with economics or the skills of a police force. Instead, it’s all about God taking an interest and helping out the law enforcement in the area. That’s why the leaders of Jackson, Miss., got together for a prayer session to invoke the Lord in their work keeping the public safe. “I consider prayer a matter of faith, but I also consider it a strategy. If you want help, if you need help, then you should ask the greatest power in the universe for help,” said Jackson Police Department Chief Lee Vance according to the Clarion Ledger. “Not for selfish reasons, but to help us do our job as far as lowering crime and keeping this city safe.” Crime has now gone down 14 percent since everyone asked God for assistance, the police chief says.
4) The death of a small child, thereby preventing future evil
Religious right icon Pat Robertson has been going even further into extremism as he ages, yet his show The 700 Club continues to broadcast, unfailingly, and even stranger, people keep asking him for his advice about the will of God. Perhaps that will stop, now that Robertson tried to convince a grieving mother that it’s better for her child to be dead than potentially grow up to be the next leader of a genocidal movement. “As far as God’s concerned, he knows the end from the beginning and He sees a little baby and that little baby could grow up to be Adolf Hitler, he could grow up to be Joseph Stalin, he could grow up to be some serial killer, or he could grow up to die of a hideous disease,” Robertson said, according to Right Wing Watch. “God sees all of that, and for that life to be terminated while he’s a baby, he’s going to be with God forever in Heaven so it isn’t a bad thing.” So much for bringing comfort and peace.
