U.S. says transgender discrimination in schools is illegal
The
U.S. Department of Education has told a California school district that
it cannot bar a transgender boy who was assigned the female sex at birth
from using male restrooms, as doing so violates federal laws against
sex discrimination. Arcadia Unified School District has agreed to make
systemwide changes to accommodate transgender students in exchange for
the DOE ending its investigation into the matter. The development adds
to a growing legal precedence that says laws banning discrimination
based on sex can be applied in cases involving gender identity and
transgender status.
