Gay MP Nigel Evans resigns as deputy speaker, will be charged with sexual assault and rape
He is being charged with eight offenses alleged between 2002 and 2013
British gay MP Nigel Evans has resigned from his post as deputy speaker of The House of Commons.
The resignation today (10 September) came after Crown Prosecution Service announced that he is being charged with sexual assault, rape and other offenses.
'We have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and that it is in the public interest to prosecute Mr Evans,' said Keir Starmer, director of public prosecutions told BBC News.
In all, Evans is being charged with eight offenses. They are alleged to have taken place between 2002 and 2013.
Evans, 55, was rearrested earlier today and was interviewed at a police station in Lancashire.
He has denied all of the accusations made against him. All involve men in their 20s.
The original rape and sexual assault allegations were made in May this year. They accuse the Conservative MP of incidents alleged to have happened in Pendleton, Lancashire between July 2009 and March 2013.
Three further indecent assault allegations emerged the following month, believed to have occurred in Blackpool and London between 2003 and 2011.
Since the accusations were made, Evans stepped down from his duties of Commons Deputy Speaker but has continued to work as an MP. Evans came out as gay in December 2010 and has since been a vocal supporter of LGBT rights.
