LGBT La. guardsmen won't get spousal benefits, officials say
The
Louisiana National Guard announced last week that it will not process
requests for benefits from same-sex couples. Spokesman Lt. Col. Mike
Kazmierzak cited the state's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in
the decision, saying, "The state of Louisiana's constitution does not
recognize same-sex marriage, nor does it allow a state official to take
part in an act that recognizes same-sex marriage." Louisiana is the
third state to announce it will not process the requests, joining Texas
and Mississippi
