John Hagee to Atheists: Accept America as a Christian Nation or LEAVE
by Bob Cull
Clearly,
history is not one of Pastor John Hagee's strong suits. He fired his
latest salvo in the imaginary war on Christmas at atheists saying that
this is a Christian nation and if they don't like that they are free to
leave.
Attacking
those who would speak truth to the historical roots of the Christmas
celebration he said, “Humanists are now making the claim that Christmas
was originally a pagan holiday. Hey, dummy, look at the word:
Christ-mas.”
While
it is true that Christmas comes from the original Roman Catholic term
"Christ's Mass," the word is the only thing with strictly Christian
roots -- all of the rest of the trappings and rituals of the holiday come from much older pagan celebrations. In other words, as the good pastor ridicules those who know the history, he only displays his own ignorance.
He
is apparently unschooled in the intent of the Constitution as well,
since after suggesting that non Christians avail themselves of the
frequent flights out of the country he concludes, “It’s time for the
majority to rule this nation!”
Sorry
again, Pastor Hagee, but the intent of the Constitution is to prevent
absolute rule by the majority. Unfettered, majority rule would rapidly
become tyranny by the majority, the sort of thing that pastor Hagee
advocates.
