NOM's March for Marriage draws paltry crowd at US capitol

Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee and other speakers appeared before less than 2,000 people 20 June 2014 | By Greg Hernandez Photo: Human Rights Campaign via Twitter The National Organization's March for Marriage event on Thursday (19 June) drew failed Republican presidential hopefuls Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee as speakers. But the much-ballyhooed event in Washington DC failed to draw much of a crowd. The Human Rights Campaign tweeted a photo of the sparse crowd at the anti-gay marriage event that was estimated to have been attended by between 1,000 and 2,000 people. NOM had organized the event to promote a message they say 'is simple, clear, and positive: marriage is the union of one man and one woman, and it should be protected because children deserve both a mother and a father.' Santorum, a former US senator from Pennsylvania, said during his remark: 'First and foremost in this movement, we have to reclaim marriage for what it is. Marriage is the union of a man and a woman for the purpose of making two people as one—a unity—and secondly, to have and raise children. No other union can accomplish those two purposes.' Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, called last June's Supreme Court ruling that gutted the Defense of Marriage Act the greatest heresy of our time.' He also said: 'The government doesn’t give us our rights. The government only has the responsibility to protect the rights God gave us.' Other speakers included Rev. Bill Owens of the Coalition of African-American Pastors, and the Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone.
