90 Percent Of Irish Adults Under 24 Support Gay Marriage

A large majority of Irish people support gay marriage, a new poll released Thursday has found.

Results of the Red C poll are based on 1002 telephone interviews.

A large majority (76%) of respondents said that they support marriage equality. Young adults under 24 were most likely to support it (90%), while only 55 percent of those over 65 said that they favored such unions.

Women were more likely than men to support it, 81 to 72 percent.

The poll “is further evidence of the deep repository of goodwill amongst voters in Ireland towards full equality for same sex couples,” said Mark Kelly, director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties.

The survey is good news for supporters of a referendum on the issue scheduled to take place in May.

However, some worry complacency and low voter turnout could work against passage.
