Nearing the end of the their 17-day vacation in Hawaii, President Obama and the First Lady had their New Year’s Day dinner at one of the most expensive restaurants in Hawaii – where memberships can run upwards of $500,000.
The Obamas enjoyed a nearly three-hour-long, 15-course meal that is priced at nearly $300 a head. According to Honolulu Magazine, that doesn’t include the dessert, wine, or tip, and a dinner for two can run $1000 or more.
Vintage Cave’s website describes the restaurant as nothing short of a restaurant for the elite of America.
At Vintage Cave Honolulu, one can enjoy exceptional food and wine at the hands of gifted masters of the culinary arts. ‘Chef’s recommendation’ commands a gravitas guaranteed to satisfy the most discerning palate. Seasoned sommelier’s [sic] conduct the process of pairing wine and food with true finesse and style. Secure in the natural embrace of the cave-like environment, guests are encouraged to relax, ‘hit reset’ and escape the ordinary.”
A lot of people took to Twitter to show their distaste with the Obamas’ dining choice – a restaurant with a membership fee that would take most working Americans more than a decade to earn. Many equated it to royalty:
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with the President forking out $1,000 for a fancy meal, if he is paying for it on his own dime.
Still, many feel that the act is insensitive to the President’s previously stated commitment to the middle class.
President Obama stated in September that he needs to be more aware of “optics,” after being criticized for leaving a press conference about the beheading of American journalist James Foley to play golf.
