Israel's Best Friends in the European Parliament? The Extreme Right.

Israel's Best Friends in the European Parliament? The Extreme Right.

Yesterday, the European Parliament voted to put special labels on consumer goods produced in Israeli settlements and to "differentiate" between EU policy toward Israel and to the settlements.

The vote was 525 to 70, with 31 abstentions.

Unlike in the US, where such an action would have received bipartisan opposition, there was wide cross-partisan support.

For five political groups, all--or nearly all--members supported the resolution: the centrist-liberal Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (56 to 1), the Christian democratic European People's Party (179 to 1, with 3 abstentions), the Greens-European Free Alliance (44 to 0), European United Left-Nordic Green Left (37 to 0, with 1 abstention), and the social democratic Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (161 to 3, with 1 abstention).

Over half of the NO votes came from two countries: the UK and France.
22 out of the 70 NO votes came from the UK: 20 from xenophobic Ukippers and 2 from the Tories.

21 out of the 70 NO votes came from France: all from the hard-right National Front.

In other words, Israel's "best friends" in Europe are xenophobic, Islamophobic nationalists who, in the case of of the National Front (and some of the other parties in Europe of Nations and Freedom), have histories of fascism and anti-Semitism.

Over half of the abstentions came from Poland: 16 from the anti-federalist, conservative European Conservatives and Reformists (16 from the Law and Justice party and 1 from the Right Wing of the Republic) and 1 from the EPP (Civic Platform at home).

The Polish right-wing? Yep, Israel's European friends are anti-Semites who support Israel because of a shared hatred of Muslims.
