Utah book publisher pulls novel because author is gay
Author who insisted on being open about his sexuality on his book biography has his upcoming book release canceled
A Utah based book publisher has cancelled an upcoming young adult novel because one of the co-authors is openly gay.
Joint authors Michael Jensen and David Powers King have collaborated on a young adult novel called Woven.
The novel was scheduled to be published by Cedar Fort Publishing and Media in October.
Jensen noticed on a proof final copy of the books cover his bio had been edited removing ‘He lives in Salt Lake City with his boyfriend and their four dogs’.
Once Jensen reached out to Cedar Fort to find out why they explained Cedar House was concerned about ruining their relationship with their Latter Day Saints church affiliations.
Jensen offered to change the bio to the word ‘partner’ to keep it gender neutral but Cedar Fort insisted that all reference to his boyfriend be removed.
Cedar Fort have since elected to cancel the publication and return the rights for Woven to the two authors.
Jensen has claimed he spoke to Cedar Fort's owner Lyle Mortimer who said the author was trying to destroy families.
‘He even started saying inappropriate things about how God had given me a penis for a reason,' he said.
‘It was very uncomfortable, then he threatened to publish Woven without our names attached or without our bios at all.'
King explained: ‘While we are disappointed that Woven won’t be published when we originally planned, we’d much rather be signed by a publisher who fully supports us.’
