The “rape insurance” law, passed by Michigan legislation, will deny insurance coverage for abortions
even if the pregnancy was the result of rape. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow
was appalled by this new legislation that has gone into effect today.

getting an abortion if you got pregnant because you were raped. That’s
why the law’s opponents are calling it the ‘rape insurance’ bill. No
one plans on having an unplanned pregnancy, but if you want to make sure
your abortion is covered in case you get raped, you now have to buy
special stand-alone coverage for that in Michigan.”[/box]
Pro-Life
Michigan knows that this will not actually lower abortion rates, but
rather just put the payment cost on the woman, because ultimately she is
to "blame" for getting raped, so therefore should suffer the consequences.
Furthermore, this appears to be a fantastic way for the state of Michigan to make more money. This legislature is a way to force women into purchasing a rider just in case they get raped, which is an additional cost along with the cost of health insurance.
Insurance
companies were required to tell the state if they planned on offering
coverage for abortions. The seven that agreed to provide the coverage
would only do so for employer-sponsored plans, which would not include
individually owned insurance.
