Teacher Suspended for Facebook Post Comparing LGBT Members of Gay-Straight Alliance Club to Drug Users, Drag Racers, Deer Poachers
by Erica King
Bringing awareness to the LGBT community will probably be the most effective way to end discrimination
towards them. However, comparing this community to Drug Users, Drag
Racers, and Deer Poachers is not the way to go about it, especially when
it’s coming from a schoolteacher.
David Foggin, teacher at Parkersburg South High School in Parkersburg, West Virginia was suspended on Tuesday due to a malicious Facebook post
regarding the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance Club. The post featured an
image advertising the club’s meetings and a caption worthy of more than
just a suspension:

drugged/sober club, smokeless tobacco vs smokes club, street racing, and
deer poaching clubs."[/box]
Wood
County school board is currently deciding whether Foggin’s suspension
will be paid or unpaid and if any changes need to be made to this
punishment. His post drew in hundreds of comments about his apparent
bullying. What example is this setting for the students? This “teacher”
needs a lesson on the detrimental effect bullying has on kids and young adults, regardless of sexual orientation, not just a slap on the wrist by the school board.
