Lesbian couple gunned down by obsessed U.S. Coast Guard co-worker
BOURNE,
Mass. — A heavily armed Coast Guard member, allegedly obsessed for
years with an attractive former co-worker — a lesbian who married
another female co-worker — is charged with fatally wounding the woman
and seriously injuring her spouse.
Lisa Trubnikova was killed in a shooting in Bourne, Mass., on Thursday. Her spouse, Anna Trubnikova, was wounded and was hospitalized in stable condition.
Adrian Loya (center) is charged with fatally wounding Lisa Trubnikova and seriously injuring her spouse, Anna Trubnikova.
The two women were U.S. Coast Guard petty officers.
Another Coast Guard member, Adrian Loya, of Chesapeake, Va., has been charged in the shooting.
Loya, 31, is believed to have driven to Massachusettsearlier in the week and rented a motel room near the couple’s condo complex about an hour’s drive south ofBoston.
Armed with two rifles, a 9mm handgun and a shotgun, Loya is alleged to have stormed the couple’s home on Thursday. He also lit a car on fire to hamper police, planted fake bombs and opened fire on police officers, authorities said.
One police officer, Jared MacDonald, was shot in the back. MacDonald’s family said Friday he was doing well but faces a long recovery.
Loya pleaded not guilty to charges including murder, and was detained without bail.
“He became obsessed,” one family member said. “He was fixated on her.”
After the couple moved to Cape Cod, Loya continued to pursue Lisa romantically, although she showed no interest, relatives said.
Lisa
Trubnikova, 31, was based at Coast Guard Base Cape Cod. Anna
Trubnikova, 30, is based at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England.
Rear
Adm. Linda Fagan offered her thoughts and prayers for the families,
friends and loved ones of those affected by the shooting.
“In
committing our support to them, our focus turns to remembering the life
and service of Petty Officer Lisa Trubnikova and aiding the recovery of
Petty Officer Anna Trubnikova,” she said in a statement.
She
acknowledged the speedy response of the Bourne Police Department and
said it “saved the life of Petty Officer Anna Trubnikova and removed the
threat to the community.” She thanked MacDonald, a Coast Guard veteran.
“We
extend our heartfelt thanks to those in the community and the Coast
Guard family who stand alongside us as we mourn the tragic loss of Petty
Officer (2nd Class Lisa Trubnikova) and wish the speedy recovery of
Petty Officer 3rd Class Anna Trubnikova and Officer Jared MacDonald,”
she said.
