Ala. advances bill to let officials, clergy opt out of same-sex marriages

and ministers in Alabama would be allowed to decline
marriage-officiating requests from same-sex couples under a bill passed
by the state House last week. A number of Democratic state lawmakers
characterized the bill as discriminatory and unnecessary. "We are
wasting time and wasting taxpayers' money," said Rep. Merika
Coleman-Evans, a Democrat. The Huntsville Times (Ala.)
