The U.S. Department of Education on Monday said an Illinois school
district violated anti-discrimination laws by denying a transgender
student, who identifies as a girl, access to a locker room. In a letter
to the Palatine, Illinois, school district, the Education Department’s
Office of Civil Rights said requiring a transgender student to use
private changing and showering facilities was a violation of the
student’s rights under Title IX, which bans sex discrimination. The
Education Department gave school officials 30 days to reach an agreement
or face sanctions, which could result in administrative law proceedings
or a Justice Department court action. The district could also lose some
or all of its Title IX funding. The student, who was not identified,
should be given access to all girls’ facilities, the letter said.
