In 70% of the United States, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people can be fired just because of their sexual orientation. This shocking statistic is a contradictory reality in a nation that said yes to same-sex marriage just a few months ago. According to an in-depth study, there are laws that explicitly protect homosexual people from possible discrimination in the workplace in only 30% of US. LGBT people living in urban areas are 50 times more likely to be protected by a local, county or state law, compared to those living in rural areas. According to gay rights activists, these alarming figures reveal the urgent need to pass laws at federal level against this type of discrimination, as soon as possible.
