Report of Egypt cancelling Netanyahu’s visit; Netanyahu’s office denies such plans
A
leading Saudi new agency reported that officials in Cairo are furious
with Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz’s most recent statement, in which he
claimed that Egypt is destroying Hamas terror tunnels at Israel’s
request, and canceled Netanyahu’s scheduled trip to Egypt. Sources in
Israel deny the claims that Netanyahu planned to visit Cairo.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to visit Cairo soon but
the meeting was canceled after Egyptian officials heard Steinitz’s
recent statement regarding the Hamas terror tunnels, according to Saudi
newspaper Eleph today (Sunday). The Prime Minister’s Office denied the
report and explained: “Netanyahu had no visit to Egypt planned.”
According
to the report, which has been denied by Israel, Egypt was furious with
Steinitz’s most recent statement, in which he claimed that Egypt is
“flooding” Hamas tunnels at Israel’s request.

In
addition, the newspaper reported that Egyptian sources and Maj. Gen.
(Res.) Amos Gilad, director of the Political-Military Affairs Bureau in
the Defense Ministry, have been in contact recently in order to finalize
the meeting. However, the Egyptian government was furious with
Steinitz’s remarks and called off the meeting.
Last week, Steinitz
claimed that Egypt is flooding, at Israel’s demand, the Hamas terror
tunnels that were designed to smuggle weapons into Gaza. According to
Steinitz, “the security cooperation between Israel and Egypt is better
than ever.”
