Masturbating Monk Admits Guilt and Will Go
A
Buddhist monk who was seen masturbating in videos and displaying wads
of cash as well as playing with a smartphone in photos posted online
pleaded guilty to violating his Buddhist principles yesterday and will
soon be defrocked.
“My scandal was unexpected and what is happening is complicated in this society. I pleaded guilty for what I have done before the law,” Va Sinan said in yet another online video.
“I will leave the monkhood to preserve the value of Buddhism and the purity of the monks living in and outside of Cambodia and in order for Buddhist followers to be satisfied with my unexpected, complicated scandal,” he added before asking for forgiveness and suggesting that he will leave the monkhood soon after a defrocking is completed at the Phnom Penh Municipal Buddhist Monk Office.
Mr. Sinan’s debut video and photographs were posted last Thursday afternoon on his Facebook account, with many on social media sharing the content and criticizing him. The soon to be former monk says, however, the posts were not his.
“I lost my phone for a few days and someone hacked into my account and posted the inappropriate photos,” he said on Thursday evening in his chosen medium of online video.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Buddhist Monk Hall’s Facebook weighed in on Mr. Sinan’s confession on Monday.
“Regarding Bikkhu Va Sinan who posted the vulgar pictures shocking the public and harming the reputation of Buddhism, now the Phnom Penh Municipal Buddhist Monk Hall has ordered this Bikkhu to leave the monkhood on June 21, 2016,” a Facebook post read.
“To preserve the reputation of Buddhism, please don’t take these pictures as a subject. It is a personal issue only,” it added.
But Buntenh, founder of the Independent Monk Network, called Mr. Sinan mentally unfit for the monkhood.
“The act of Va Sinan was unacceptable and the top Buddhist monk officials did not mind him because he was considered mentally unfit. Actually, his act not only harms his individual value, but also society’s value,” Mr. Buntenh said.
“Leaving the monkhood is the right thing,” he added, before suggesting there should be additional punishment for Mr. Sinan, possibly including short-term imprisonment and monetary fines to be given back to society.
