Scientists can tell you when an earthquake is more likely to strike

Scientists can’t predict earthquakes. But they can determine the probability of larger earthquakes striking after smaller temblors occur.
Some earthquake experts are now working on faster ways to warn the public when there is an increased chance of a major quake in California. But this so-called “operational earthquake forecasting” also has critics who worry about whether these warnings are necessary.
