Police stations may soon have desks that will handle hate- or sexually-oriented crimes against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, if a bill in the House of Representatives is passed into law.

House Bill 2571 seeks to amend Republic Act 8551, the Philippine National Police Reform and Reorganization Act of 1998, by adding the LGBT desk.

"There can be no true and meaningful democracy if we continue to systematically oppress the LGBT sector," author Laguna Rep. Sol Aragones said.

Presently, RA 8551 created Women's Desks in police stations to attend to cases involving crimes against chastity and sexual harassment; and abuses against women and children and other similar offenses.

Under the measure, the Philippine National Police shall establish LGBT desks in all police stations to administer and attend to cases involving crimes against chastity, sexual harassment, hate crimes, abuses committed against women, children, and members of the LGBT community and similar offenses.

Aragones cited recent reports showing many people belonging to the LGBT community are victims of sexually-oriented crimes.

"These reports highlight the very real and pressing problem confronting the LGBT community in the Philippines," she said. — LBG, GMA News
