N.J. must allow same-sex marriages, judge rules
A
New Jersey judge ruled last week that the state must allow same-sex
couples to marry beginning Oct. 21, as failure to do so violates rights
that were affirmed in the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling against the
Defense of Marriage Act in June. "Same-sex couples must be allowed to
marry in order to obtain equal protection of the law under the New
Jersey Constitution," Judge Mary Jacobson wrote in the case, which
involved six same-sex couples. The state's attorney general has
initiated an appeal of the case.
