Police shoot dog 8 times after complaints about excessive barking

Brittany Preston, who describes her dog as “friendly, lovable and playful,’ left Lexie with her Grandfather at his home in St. Clair Shores , Michigan, while she went to work. When she got home, Lexie was dead.
She said her Grandfather has mild dementia and had forgotten that he let the dog out.
When Lexie started barking between the hours of 3:00 and 7:00 a.m, several neighbors called the police. While her grandfather tried to let Lexie in the door, police surrounded the dog.

Instead of going inside, Lexie barked at the police officers. Dogs do that.  According to the police report, the dog charged them and they shot her.
However, Preston says witnesses told her that as the dog cowered against the house, they kept shooting.
She said, “Eight shots in my dog is just horrendous.”
Witnesses told 7 Action news Brittany’s grandpa said the dog wasn’t his and police assumed that meant the dog didn’t belong there.
It’s unacceptable to just shoot a dog 8 times because they can’t locate the owner. Don’t cops carry tasers now?
According to the Saint Clair Shores Police Chief, officers worked for hours to catch the dog with a dog stick. He said they only shot when they felt the dog posed a danger to them.
Preston wants the police to find a non-lethal way to handle dogs.
“You could sedate them and find out who their owners are, instead of killing them and worrying about it later,” she said.
