The eerie secrets of masterpieces revealed: New app reveals ‘ghosts’, tears and slashed throats hidden under historic paintings
NEW
The app brings together ancient paintings with modern technology
to explore 14 of Madrid's Museo del Prado’s most celebrated
masterpieces. In the Descent from the Cross (bottom right), the painting
seen through the app's infrared function (bottom left) shows a splash
of blood across Saint John the Evangelist's throat that painter Rogier
van der Weyden later removed. In Judith at the Banquet of Holofernes
(top right), the infrared view shows there was originally another,
ghostly figure drawn into the masterpiece (top left).
