Mass grave 'containing the skeletons of 800 babies' at site of Irish home for unmarried mothers

Mass grave 'containing the skeletons of 800 babies' at site of Irish home for unmarried mothers that was run by Bon Secours nuns

Bon Secours home
Hundreds of babies and toddler are believed to have been secretly buried in a concrete tank next to a former children's home, pictured right, in Tuam, Co. Galway between 1925-1961. The mother and baby home for single mothers was run by Bon Secours nuns, but babies and children suffered malnourishment and neglect, and scores died. Bridget Dolan, left, had two sons, both of whom were placed in the home in the 1940s and both of whom are thought to have died there in infancy. The scandal of the unmarked mass grave has been uncovered by a local historian who is working to establish a memorial to the youngsters who died there.
