A textbook on Mexican Americans that gets their history wrong? Oh, Texas

A text up for approval by the Texas state board of education would, for the first time, feature Tejanos. But the book is mired with inaccuracies

After activists demanded last year that Mexican American studies be included in Texas’ public school curriculum, the State Board of Education has responded with Mexican-American Heritage, the first textbook on the subject ever up for inclusion in the board’s list of approved books.
A sample of it was posted on the Texas Education Agency’s website earlier this month, and boy is it a piece of work. The excerpt is racist, revisionist and in some parts just blatantly false. That’s scary, because Texas’s textbook choices have a disproportionate influence on school book sales nationwide.
There are so many unsubstantiated claims about Mexican Americans in this book I couldn’t possibly list them all in this column, but I’ll give you a few standout examples.
There’s the assertion that Chicanos, as some Mexican Americans call themselves, are anti-education and anti-English. “Chicano philosophy, which pervades urban Latino areas,” the book says,
often reinforces the idea that rebellion against the establishment is part of the true Mexican identity. High school and college youth may refuse to attend class, speak English or learn certain subjects because they perceive injustice in the school system, sometimes led by well-meaning Latino adults. This hinders prosperity because adequate employment depends on many years of intense study.
This is hilariously off base, since Chicanos are a group of civically engaged Mexican Americans who are literally fighting to have their own curriculum put into schools.

Not to mention, Chicanos are a Mexican-American subgroup, not immigrants. According to US Census Bureau data, US-born Latinos are the main drivers of Hispanic population growth since the year 2000, and their English is often much better than their Spanish. Even among Hispanics (ages five and older) who speak a language other than English at home, 56% report speaking English very well, according to the Pew Research Center.
The book goes on to claim that Chicanos want to destroy western civilization, which is pretty ambitious for a group they claim can’t even get to class. I guess when western civilization only encompasses Anglo Americans, it’s not such a big job.
The book also blames Mexican Americans for their historically low educational attainment and overall lack of economic prosperity by comparing them unfavorably to Cuban Americans, “whose heritage promotes a positive view of business and advancement”. If you’ve been following along, dear reader, you’ll recall my column from last July laying out the difference between the Mexican-American and Cuban-American experience.
Long story short, our federal government displays a huge a double standard in favor of Cuban immigrants. Just for starters, when Cubans are caught entering the United States without documentation, they’re granted refuge if they have at least one foot on US soil, while Mexicans are deported or thrown in a detention center. But I’m sure it’s just the Mexicans’ bad attitude that’s keeping them from thriving economically in this country.

Then there’s the section in Mexican-American Heritage that says claims of Anglo-American land grabbing from Mexicans during the late 19th century are largely exaggerated. “Some deeds may have been acquired unscrupulously, but the majority was legally sold,” the book says.
I guess someone better tell Ulysses S Grant who, in his memoirs, wrote that the entire Mexican-American war was a front for acquiring more land that was unopposed to slavery. Not to mention the 187,000 acres of Tejano-owned land that was extorted through state sanction violence by the Texas Rangers, which has been documented by the scholars of the Refusing to Forget project.
All these mischaracterizations are being spearheaded by former Texas state board of education member Cynthia Dunbar, who owns the text’s publishing company, Momentum Instruction. Despite serving on the state board for four years, Dunbar homeschooled her children and wrote a book called One Nation Under God: How the Left Is Trying to Erase What Made Us Great. It calls public education a “subtly deceptive tool of perversion” due to the fact that Christians aren’t allowed to preach religion there.
Jaime Riddle, who lists herself on LinkedIn as the book’s primary author, wrote on Facebook that “it was an honor to learn about real Mexican-American heritage”, while writing ... a textbook on the subject. She also maintains a rather extensive author profile on Amazon with her husband Will Riddle, which lists blog posts and YouTube videos featuring Will Riddle expounding on the shortcomings of academia in the face of biblical teachings.
Texans have until September to weigh in on this text before the board votes on whether to approve it. One group has already begun an online petition demanding the Texas Education Agency reopen the call for textbooks, a call that Mexican-American studies publishers say they never received the first time. With this board’s history of policymaking, I’m not holding my breath.

Leader of France’s Jewish Defence League on run in Israel after conviction in Paris

Leader of France’s Jewish Defence League on run in Israel after conviction in Paris

MEMO | June 1, 2016
The leader of France’s Jewish Defence League was on the run in Israel on Wednesday after receiving a prison sentence for violent gang attacks in Paris, according to a MEMO source in Paris.
Joseph Ayache, 30, was convicted on Tuesday night alongside three accomplices by the 14th Chamber of the Paris Correctional Court.
All four defendants were self-confessed members of the far-right JDL, which is banned in both Israel and the USA for its links to terrorism.
Despite this, it is extremely active in France, where its yellow-and-black clenched fist flags are frequently seen at rallies in cities such as Paris and Marseille.
Ayache, who has previous convictions for racist violence, mainly against French Muslims, was found guilty of leading “extremely violent and coordinated attacks” against pro-Palestine activists in Paris.
These ranged from punishment beatings to issuing anonymous terror threats by phone or email, and were aggravated by the use of potentially lethal weapons.
Steve Bismuth, 27, Daniel Benassaya, 30, and Laurent Cashauda, 20, all turned up in court, but Ayache stayed away, insisting he feared for his life outside Israel, where he is known to have served with the military.

The court heard how the defendants, who insisted they were “fighting back against rising anti-Semitism”, carried out a series of “degrading and vicious” assaults against mainly women in 2012.
These included setting up a bogus interview with the Muslim politician and anti-racism campaigner Houria Bouteldja, 43, and then pouring a tin of red paint over her head.
Victims also included anti-Zionist Jews, such as 68-year-old Olivia Zemor, co-founder of the Euro-Palestine group. Mrs Zemor told the Paris court that the JDL used a “highly toxic substance” to “defile” her and that she also received calls threatening her granddaughter.
The JDL vigilantes wore hoodies to hide their identities during the attacks, but filmed them, and then placed propaganda videos on YouTube, said prosecutors.
Barrister Dominique Cochain said: “They [the attacks] were meticulously organised by Ayache and left victims injured, scared and utterly humiliated.”
There is no extradition treaty between Israel and France, meaning Ayache, described in court as “one time chief of the JDL” will escape his year in prison if he stays in the Middle East.
Benassaya and Kashauda each received a six month suspended sentence for aggravated violent acts, while Bismuth received a fine equivalent to around £700 for posting videos on social media.

Olivia Zemor and Houria Bouteldja were awarded damages equivalent to around £15000 combined, and court costs.
In March this year, six other JDL members were jailed in Paris over an attack targeting a fundraising event for Gaza. The defendants used iron bars, baseball bats and bike chains during the attack, deliberately targeting anybody who looked like a Muslim.

U.S. Death Rate Up 1st Time in a Decade

U.S. Death Rate Up 1st Time in a Decade

The U.S. death rate rose for the first time in a decade last year, according to new federal data. New numbers from the National Center for Health Statistics show more Americans are dying from drug overdoses, suicide, and Alzheimer’s disease. The rates have been declining for years amid improvements in medical technology, disease management, and overall health. While certain groups, like less-educated whites, have seen sharp rises in death rates due to the prescription-drug epidemic, national increases for the entire population have become exceedingly rare. Robert Anderson, chief of mortality statistics at the NCHS, said it’s significant because the uptick doesn’t usually happen. “But the question is,” he added, “what does it mean? We really need more data to know. If we start looking at 2016 and we see another rise, we’ll be a lot more concerned.”

Dad Takes Pregnant Kid to Marry Rapist

Dad Takes Pregnant Kid to Marry Rapist

An Idaho man will spend four months in prison after taking his pregnant 14-year-old daughter to Missouri to marry the 24-year-old man who had sex with her. According to the Associated Press, the girl’s father said he believed the man should marry his daughter after impregnating her. The teenager and the man reportedly told family members they wanted to be married, with the girl also claiming she did not want the child to grow up under split custody. The father of the unidentified teenager pleaded guilty to injury to a child and will spend 120 days behind bars, in addition to three years of supervised probation. The 24-year-old statutory rapist was sentenced in April to 15 years in prison, and will serve at least three before becoming eligible for parole.

An internal Defense Department investigation has determined that a 2010 night raid conducted by U.S. special-operations forces in Afghanistan that killed two pregnant women and five other civilians followed the rules of engagement. The troops will face no disciplinary measures, The Intercept reports. Soldiers reportedly dug bullets out of at least one of the dead pregnant women. Two children were shot during the raid. The investigators still concluded that “the amount of force utilized was necessary, proportional, and applied at appropriate time,” though “tactical mistakes” were made.

Trump ‘Crafted’ Disputed University Ads

Trump ‘Crafted’ Disputed University Ads

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump reportedly had a hand in personally devising the marketing strategy for his controversial Trump University. The Donald vetted potential ads, was involved in discussions around them, and signed off “any time we had a new ad,” according to sworn testimony in a lawsuit concerning the for-profit real-estate school. Plaintiffs have said the marketing was misleading. The testimony has been made public as part of an order Friday from U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel. A request by The Washington Post claimed the public has a right to learn about a business—especially one under investigation—run by a potential president. Michael Sexton, Trump University’s president, said in the 2012 deposition: “Mr. Trump understandably is protective of his brand and very protective of his image and how he’s portrayed. And he wanted to see how his brand and image were portrayed in Trump University marketing materials. And he had very good and substantive input as well.” In the records released Tuesday, employees describe Trump University as a scam. Unearthed company manuals—or “playbooks”—revealed that staff members were told to aggressively steer particularly vulnerable customers toward expensive courses.

Mapping that sinking feeling

Tracking every move

1 June 2016 For a low-lying, densely populated country like the Netherlands, monitoring subsidence is critical. Until recently, tiny displacements in the ground beneath our feet couldn’t be mapped nationally but, thanks to the Sentinel-1 mission, this is now possible.
Focusing on the Netherlands and Denmark, scientists have been using radar images from the  Sentinel-1A satellite to pinpoint where the ground is stable, where it is rising and where it is sinking – and, importantly, by exactly how much.
Images from November 2014 to April 2016 and 2.5 million measurement points were used to compile the map above, which shows subsidence and uplift in the northeast of the Netherlands. Most of these measurements were made around buildings and constructions such as dikes.
Remarkably, these measurements are accurate to a few millimetres. However, within a couple of years this accuracy will improve further, approaching 1 mm/year over the entire country.
Vulnerable shores
This degree of accuracy, which was not achievable over such a large area before Sentinel-1, is needed for numerous applications such as building and maintaining effective flood defences – an application particularly relevant for the Netherlands.
Ramon Hanssen from Delft University of Technology said, “For a nation largely sitting below sea level, surface deformation is of existential importance for the Netherlands.
“Satellite data from the Sentinel-1 mission helps us to monitor and maintain the high safety standards the Dutch population expects.”
The map at the top shows that some areas, particularly along the western shore of the Ijsselmeer, along the lower causeway that crosses this manmade lake, and some areas close to Groningen in the east, are sinking by as much as 20 mm a year.
Since gas is extracted in this region, monitoring ground deformation here is particularly important.
Subsidence from salt mining
The zoom-in of the area around Veendam (right) shows subsidence thought to be caused by salt mining activities.
Marking the first milestone towards using Sentinel-1 to map ground movement nationwide, these results are thanks to a study carried out by PPO.labs and Norut though ESA’s Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions initiative.
“From a technical point of view, these preliminary results clearly demonstrate the potential of such nationwide products. We now have to start preparing systems that can provide standardised products to end users,” said Yngvar Larsen from Norut.
There is huge potential for using standardised ground-deformation information for sectors such as insurance, utility services and construction.
Petar Marinkovic from PPO.labs said, “This unique capability, once a prerogative of larger companies, will now foster growth of small and medium enterprises in the Earth observation market.”
In Denmark, ground deformation affects the sewerage system as pipelines are compromised. As well causing leaky and broken pipes, changes in the surface also affect the way water accumulates and runs off. As a result, Denmark’s utility sector spends of tens of millions of euros every year to modify subsurface water and wastewater pipelines.
Subsidence in Denmark
Understanding land deformation is important for investing in renovations.
Lars Noergaard Holmegaard, CEO of the Danish Lemvig Water and Waste Water Company, said, “If we can incorporate reliable information on land subsidence and uplift in our investment plans for the pipelines, we can focus the renovation activities where they are most needed and secure a functional network while reducing maintenance costs.”
Sentinel-1A, which has been in orbit since April 2014, is clearly paving the way for these new applications.
Moreover, now that its identical twin Sentinel-1B has also been launched, data delivery and coverage will be further improved.  It is expected that the constellation will produce more than 10 terabytes of data per day.
“The open data policy and regular acquisition plan of the Copernicus programme allows research and development to be carried out at tremendous speed, providing results that can affect the world within a few hours after a satellite has gathered data,” noted Dr Marinkovic.

trangender terms

this might help with various terms that are being tossed out wildly

Anyone whose physical makeup, emotional, sexual and/or self-expression is in conflict with current cultural gender stereotypes.
1. A transgender transcends cultural gender norms.
2. A European woman who wore pants in 1910 was a transgender because she violated current cultural gender stereotypes of the day.

Transgender Terminology

January 15, 2014
Terminology within the transgender community varies and has changed over time so we recognize the need to be sensitive to usage within particular communities.
Transgender: A term for people whose gender identity, expression or behavior is different from those typically associated with their assigned sex at birth. Transgender is a broad term and is good for non-transgender people to use. "Trans" is shorthand for "transgender." (Note: Transgender is correctly used as an adjective, not a noun, thus "transgender people" is appropriate but "transgenders" is often viewed as disrespectful.)
Transgender Man: A term for a transgender individual who currently identifies as a man (see also “FTM”).
Transgender Woman: A term for a transgender individual who currently identifies as a woman (see also “MTF”).
Gender Identity: An individual’s internal sense of being male, female, or something else. Since gender identity is internal, one’s gender identity is not necessarily visible to others.
Gender Expression: How a person represents or expresses one’s gender identity to others, often through behavior, clothing, hairstyles, voice or body characteristics.
Transsexual: An older term for people whose gender identity is different from their assigned sex at birth who seeks to transition from male to female or female to male. Many do not prefer this term because it is thought to sound overly clinical.
Cross-dresser: A term for people who dress in clothing traditionally or stereotypically worn by the other sex, but who generally have no intent to live full-time as the other gender. The older term "transvestite" is considered derogatory by many in the United States.
Queer: A term used to refer to lesbian, gay, bisexual and, often also transgender, people. Some use queer as an alternative to "gay" in an effort to be more inclusive. Depending on the user, the term has either a derogatory or an affirming connotation, as many have sought to reclaim the term that was once widely used in a negative way.
Genderqueer: A term used by some individuals who identify as neither entirely male nor entirely female.
Gender Non-conforming: A term for individuals whose gender expression is different from societal expectations related to gender.
Bi-gendered: One who has a significant gender identity that encompasses both genders, male and female. Some may feel that one side or the other is stronger, but both sides are there.
Two-Spirit: A contemporary term that refers to the historical and current First Nations people whose individuals spirits were a blend of male and female spirits. This term has been reclaimed by some in Native American LGBT communities in order to honor their heritage and provide an alternative to the Western labels of gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.
FTM: A person who transitions from "female-to-male," meaning a person who was assigned female at birth, but identifies and lives as a male. Also known as a “transgender man.”
MTF: A person who transitions from "male-to-female," meaning a person who was assigned male at birth, but identifies and lives as a female. Also known as a “transgender woman.”
Sex Reassignment Surgery: Surgical procedures that change one’s body to better reflect a person’s gender identity. This may include different procedures, including those sometimes also referred to as "top surgery" (breast augmentation or removal) or "bottom surgery" (altering genitals). Contrary to popular belief, there is not one surgery; in fact there are many different surgeries. These surgeries are medically necessary for some people, however not all people want, need, or can have surgery as part of their transition. "Sex change surgery" is considered a derogatory term by many.
Sexual Orientation: A term describing a person’s attraction to members of the same sex and/or a different sex, usually defined as lesbian, gay, bisexual, heterosexual, or asexual.
Transition: The time when a person begins to living as the gender with which they identify rather than the gender they were assigned at birth, which often includes changing one’s first name and dressing and grooming differently. Transitioning may or may not also include medical and legal aspects, including taking hormones, having surgery, or changing identity documents (e.g. driver’s license, Social Security record) to reflect one’s gender identity. Medical and legal steps are often difficult for people to afford.
Intersex: A term used for people who are born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy and/or chromosome pattern that does not seem to fit typical definitions of male or female. Intersex conditions are also known as differences of sex development (DSD).
Drag Queen: Used to refer to male performers who dress as women for the purpose of entertaining others at bars, clubs, or other events. It is also sometimes used in a derogatory manner to refer to transgender women.
Drag King: Used to refer to female performers who dress as men for the purposes of entertaining others at bars, clubs, or other events.

Did Margaret Thatcher Celebrate the Fall of the Berlin Wall?

British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was opposed to tearing down the
Berlin Wall and reuniting Germany.

Former US President Ronald Reagan often gets the credit for precipitating
the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, which led to the eventual restoration
of a united Germany. Reagan is well known for the 1987 speech in which he
urged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.” But not
all of Reagan's Cold War allies wanted to see East and West Germany
reunified. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was staunchly opposed
to the whole idea.
