$5 Theft Suspect Found Dead in Cell

Police are investigating the death of a 24-year-old black man who had been held without bail since April on charges he stole $5 worth of snacks from a 7-Eleven. Jamycheal Mitchell was found dead on the floor of  his jail cell on Aug. 19. Prison officials in Portsmouth, Virginia, are citing natural causes while an autopsy is performed and say they see no reason for suspicion, though Mitchell did suffer from mental-health problems. Mitchell’s family say they believe his body failed after he refused meals and medication. Mitchell was being held while waiting for a bed at a state-run mental-health facility after a judge ruled he was not fit to stand trial.
