HOW TO START A FIGHT

Subject: HOW TO START A FIGHT

One  year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift...

The next  year, I didn't buy her a gift.

When she asked  me why, I replied,

"Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!"

And that's how the fight started.....
 ________________________________
My wife and I were watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed.

I turned to  her and said, 'Do you want to have  Sex?'

'No,' she answered. I then said,

'Is that your final answer?'

She didn't even look  at me this time, simply saying, 'Yes..'

So I said, "Then I'd like to phone a friend."

And that's when the fight started...
_______________________________
I took my wife to a restaurant.

The waiter, for some reason, took my order first.

"I'll have  the rump steak, rare, please."

He said,  "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?"

"Nah, she can order for herself."

And that's when the fight  started.....
 _______________________________
My  wife and I were sitting at a table at her high  school reunion, and she kept staring at a  drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table.

I asked her, "Do you know  him?"

"Yes", she sighed, "He's my old  boyfriend.  I understand he took to drinkingright after we split up those many years ago,  and I hear he hasn't been sober since."

"My  God!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?"

And then the fight  started...
 ________________________________
When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it  fixed.  But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the  boat, making beer.. Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of  a clever way to make her point.

When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the  tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny  pair of sewing
scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I  came out again, I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you  might as well sweep the driveway."

The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always  have a limp.
 ______________________________

My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels.

She asked, "What's on TV?"

I said, "Dust."

And then the fight started...
 ________________________________
Saturday  morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, and slipped quietly into the garage.  I hooked up the boat up to the  van and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.

I went back into the house,  quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife's back; now with a different anticipation, and whispered, "The  weather out there is terrible."

My loving wife of 5 years replied, "And, can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?"

And that's how the fight started...
_______________________________
After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security.

The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's License to verify my age.

I looked in my  pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home.  I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later.

The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'.

So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.

She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.

She said, 'You should have  dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability too.'

And then the fight started...
 ________________________________
My wife was standing nude, looking in the bedroom  mirror. She was not happy with what she saw and said to me, "I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly.  I really need you to pay me a compliment.'

I replied, "Your eyesight's damn near perfect."

And then the fight started........
 ________________________________
I rear-ended a car this morning...the start of a REALLY bad day!

The driver got out of the other car, and he was a DWARF!!

He looked up at me and said 'I am NOT Happy!'

So I said, 'Well, which one ARE you then?'

That's how the fight started.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO THOSE OF YOU WHO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS!!

SOL INVICTUS ("the Unconquered Sun") or, more fully, Deus Sol Invictus ("the Unconquered Sun God") was the late Roman state sun god. The cult was created by the emperor Aurelian in 274 and continued until the abolition of paganism under Theodosius I. The Romans held a festival on December 25 called Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, "the birthday of the unconquered sun."

The use of the title Sol Invictus allowed several solar deities to be worshipped collectively, including Elah-Gabal, a Syrian sun god; Sol, the patron god of Emperor Aurelian (270-274); and Mithras. Oh, and a Jewish upstart named Jesus.

December 25th was also considered to be the date of the winter solstice, which the Romans called bruma. It was therefore the day the Sun proved itself to be "unconquered" despite the shortening of daylight hours. (When Julius Caesar introduced the Julian Calendar in 45 B.C.E., December 25th was approximately the date of the solstice. In modern times, the solstice falls on December 21st or 22nd.)

The Sol Invictus festival has a "strong claim on the responsibility" for the date of Christmas, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia. Solar symbolism was popular with early Christian writers as Jesus was considered to be the "sun of righteousness."

The date for Christmas may also bear a relation to the sun worship. According to the scholiast on the Syriac bishop Jacob Bar-Salibi, writing in the twelfth century:

"It was a custom of the Pagans to celebrate on the same 25 December the birthday of the Sun, at which they kindled lights in token of festivity. In these solemnities and revelries the Christians also took part. Accordingly when the doctors of the Church perceived that the Christians had a leaning to this festival, they took counsel and resolved that the true Nativity should be solemnized on that day." (cited in "Christianity and Paganism in the Fourth to Eighth Centuries", Ramsay MacMullen. Yale:1997, p155)

418 B.C.E. (before Christmas) – EPAMINONDAS, Greek warrior and general, born (d: 362 B.C.E.). Considered to have been one of the great military geniuses of the ancient world, he is included here, on Christmas Day, not because of his victories in battle, but because he was revered for his moral character. He was revered, too, since he had risen from an impoverished family because of his goodness, strength and character.

Epaminondas was well educated; his musical teachers were among the best in their disciplines, as was his dance instructor. Most notably, his philosophy instructor Lysis of Tarentum (who had come to live with Polymnis in his exile) was one of the last major Pythagorean philosophers. Epaminondas was devoted to Lysis and was noted for his excellence in philosophical studies.

Not merely an academic, Epaminondas was noted for his physical prowess, and in his youth he devoted much time to strengthening and preparing himself for combat. In 385 B.C.E., in a skirmish near the city of Mantinea, Epaminondas, at great risk to his own life, saved the life of his future partner Pelopidas, an act thought to have cemented the life-long friendship between the two.

He was, like most Greek warriors, homosexual – but with a difference. He never married and did not produce an heir. His delight in boys was complete in itself for him. His two favorite boys, Asopichus and Leuctra, both fell in battle, as did Epaminondas. Both, by his order, are buried in his tomb.

1908 – QUENTIN CRISP, the English author bon vivant, raconteur, was born on this date (d. 1999).  Born Denis Charles Pratt, Crisp was an English writer, artist's model, actor and raconteur known for his memorable and insightful witticisms. He became a gay icon in the 1970s after publication of his memoir, The Naked Civil Servant, brought to the attention of the general public his defiant exhibitionism and longstanding refusal to conceal his sexuality.

The successful screening of The Naked Civil Servant launched Crisp in another new direction: that of performer and lecturer. He devised a one-man show and began touring the country with it. The first half of the show was an entertaining monologue loosely based on his memoirs, the second half was a question and answer session with Crisp picking the audience's written questions out at random and answering them in an amusing manner. In 1978 Crisp sold out the Duke of York's Theatre in London, then took the show to New York, where he eventually decided to move. His first stay there, in the Hotel Chelsea, coincided with a fire, a robbery, and the death of Nancy Spungen. He set about making arrangements to move to New York permanently and in 1981 he arrived with few possessions and found a small apartment in Manhattan's Lower East Side.

He continued to perform his one-man show, published ground-breaking books on the importance of contemporary manners as a means of social inclusivity as opposed to etiquette, which socially excludes, and supported himself by accepting social invitations and writing movie reviews and columns for U.S. and U.K. magazines and newspapers. He said that provided one could exist on peanuts and champagne, one could quite easily live by going to every cocktail party, premiere and first night to which one was invited. As he had done in London, Crisp allowed his phone number to remain listed in the Manhattan telephone directory and saw it as his duty to converse with anyone who called him. For the first twenty or so years of owning his own telephone he habitually answered calls with the phrase "Yes, God?" ("Just in case," he once said.) Later on he changed it to "Oh yes?" in a querulous tone of voice.

In addition to his listed phone number, he accepted dinner invitations from almost anyone. While it was expected that the inviter would pay for dinner, Quentin Crisp did his best to "sing for his supper" by regaling his hosts with wonderful stories and yarns much as he did in his theatre performances. Dinner with him was said to be one of the best shows in New York.

Prawer Jhabvala was the screenwriter for most productions. They made close to 40 films together. The Proprietor. His most recent book was, My Passage From India: A Filmmaker's Journey from Bombay to Hollywood and Beyond.

In 2002, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, an Indian civilian decoration established on January 2, 1954 by the President of India. It stands third in the hierarchy of civilian awards, after the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan, but comes before the Padma Sri. It is awarded to recognize distinguished service of a high order to the nation, in any field.

1933 - on this date the Gay classic film Queen Christina was released and starred Greta Garbo in the lead role.  The American pre-code historical drama film was directed by Rouben Mamoulian and written by H. M. Harwood and Salka Viertel and based on a story by Salka Viertel and Margaret P. Levino.

The movie is very loosely based on the life of the 17th century Queen Christina of Sweden, who, in the film, falls in love during her reign but has to deal with the political realities of her society. It was billed as Garbo's return to cinema after an eighteen-month hiatus.

1716 – THOMAS GRAY, the English writer, was born on this date (d. 1771). "My life is now but a perpetual conversation with your shadow – The known sound of your voice still rings in my ears. I cannot bear this place, where I have spend many tedious years within less than a month, after you left me…" So wrote Thomas Gray to a young man when he was 54. Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University and one of the best known poets of his time, he was also more than likely still a virgin.

The author of "An Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard," Gray had lived most of his life with his mother, but was known to have cultivated the Platonic friendship of handsome young men. One of Professor Gray's young men introduced him to the Swiss charmer, Charles de Bonstetten – and Gray was hooked. He was profoundly, deeply in love. When Bonstetten left Cambridge a year later, the poet was devastated. But the friends exchanged letters, and the young man suggested they take a walking tour together in Bonstetten's native Switzerland. Gray was overjoyed. The trip was scheduled for the summer of 1771 and Gray wrote tireless letters of devotion while counting the ticking minutes. Finally, the time was near. He would be leaving to see his handsome young man again. The poor poet dropped dead before he had one step out the door.

1944 - The play The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams is first publicly performed.

1956 – today's the birthday of the American essayist and short story writer David Sedaris.  A Grammy-Award nominated American humorist and radio contributor. Sedaris came to prominence in 1992 when National Public Radio broadcast his essay "SantaLand Diaries" He published his first collection of essays and short stories, Barrel Fever, in 1994. Each of his four subsequent essay collections, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997), Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000), and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim (2004), have become New York Times Best Sellers. As of 2004, his books had collectively sold 2.5 million copies and he is a regular contributor toThe New Yorker. Much of Sedaris' humor is autobiographical and self-deprecating, and it often concerns his family life, his middle class upbringing in the suburbs of Raleigh, NC, Greek heritage, various jobs, education, drug use, sexuality and his life in France with his partner, Hugh Hamrick. His sister is actress comedienne, author, Amy Sedaris.

"My first homosexual experience..."

Posted: 24 Dec 2011 08:43 AM PST
Growing up, I always spent more time with my brother than I did with my sisters. We would play with hot wheels, throw toy airplanes, and spent a great deal of time playing with his model train set. Back then, I didn't understand those so called gender binaries. I did not know what gay meant, and I did not know that most girls liked boys. There were no labels, and although I did not quite understand why everyone bought me a Barbie for Christmas when I had asked for a toy truck, I was happy just being me.
StarsStars
It was not until my first year of middle school that I began to experience what I later learned was homophobia. Until then, I had been content in calling myself a tomboy and most people had agreed. The way I dressed, however, quickly made me the target of pre-teens and young teenagers that had only recently heard the word "gay" themselves. The teasing quickly became constant and progressed as I moved up in grades. By the time I was in eighth grade, I was known as "the lesbian". I hadn't actually ever been with a girl, or even kissed a girl, but everyone felt certain that I had. I knew I was attracted to some girls, but I felt it didn't matter since I had never actually even held another girls hand. The teasing didn't phase me as much as the other girls hoped it had, and I suppose that inadvertently led to more taunting.

I was in grade eight when I met my first real crush. She was openly bi-sexual which had always struck me as odd. Back then, I didn't understand how someone could be so sure about it when they were still so young. Still, I never questioned her or judged her for it. I only accepted her and quickly became one of her closest friends. Through her, I was pulled into a world that would later become my own. I learned that she wasn't the only openly bi-sexual or even homosexual person in my class, and I became friends with many of them. Of course, this further encouraged the other students to pick me apart, but it didn't matter because I'd finally found a group of people that were willing to accept me as I was.
It wasn't until high school that I really came to terms with my sexuality. She and I soon became more than just friends. In the beginning, it was hard. She had always been so open about her own life. Everyone knew who she was, and despite the fact that many people didn't accept her as such, she had always been happy just being. She was truly comfortable with her identity, and I often envied her that. For months, she encouraged me to come out. She swore that I would feel relieved when I finally did, and told me that no matter what others thought about it and had to say about it, that I would still be the person I was the day before they knew. So, one day, I decided to take her advice. I told my mother, my sisters, my brother, and my friends. Not all of them were supportive, and not all of them were surprised, but I still felt relieved.
She and I were together for much of my high school life. We went our separate ways after about two years, and I haven't spoken to her since. She will always be remembered, however, as the one who helped me come to terms with my identity. My first experience with not only love, but homosexuality and the acceptance thereof.

Earlier this week, Santorum admitted that Vander Plaats approached the campaign with an indirect solicitation of money to help promote his support, but now other sources familiar with the talks between Vander Plaats and GOP candidates are characterizing the tactics as "corrupt."

Fifteen Year-Old's Take on Marriage Equality (Patch.com)
Many people question whether or not it is right for people of the same sex to marry in our society. I think there is nothing wrong with people marrying their opposite sex or same sex. Growing up, I have never viewed this as a problem. Recently, my uncle got married. He met someone and he fell in love.

How is homosexuality seen in USA?

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 08:32 AM PST
Citizens of the United States of America has mixed views on homosexuality. There are many areas where homosexuals get viewed as normal people. Other areas, however, have an unyielding animosity towards the gay community. There seems that there is no middle ground for these two extreme viewpoints to agree on. Personally, I believe that homosexuals should have their equal rights granted to them.
Homosexuality in USAHomosexuality in USA
The southern region of the United States hold the greatest hostility against homosexuals. In my opinion, it;t their view on religion that causes this unreasonable hatred. A great number of southerners profess some form of Christianity. In Christianity, the Old Testament, specifically, incites prejudice against homosexuals. I think this reason to discriminate against law-abiding gay people is senseless. The main political doctrine that the United States is based on is: Freedom. Freedom does not only apply to Christians; all citizens of the United States deserve to enjoy their freedoms that they deserve.

The Northwest and Pacific coast portions of the United States are the more Liberal regions of our country, and as a result, more open to homosexuals. Liberals tend to support homosexuals because of their common belief in human rights. I, personally, don't think it is right that segments of the population are restricted from taking part in one of societies longest traditions: Marriage.
From my point of view, discriminating against homosexuals is becoming more and more looked down upon as our society progresses into the twenty-first century. Americans, even religious ones, are becoming more aware of the injustices that take place in this country. I recently read a heartwarming story online about a group of Christians who previously victimized gay people. Apparently, they went through a trans-formative experience and adjusted their views on homosexuality. Their shame overcame them and they expressed their sorrow by apologizing to gay people at a local gay pride parade.
The repeal of the discriminatory, Don't Ask Don't Tell Act is encouraging. By repealing this stone age law, homosexuals are legally allowed to serve openly in the United States military. This is great news! My reaction to this recent development in gay rights is that this is an additional example in the country's continuing acceptance of homosexuals. I know from history class that our military was first to desegregate African-Americans from white service members; they were also the first to openly accept gay people.
My opinion on homosexuals has gone through a great deal of metamorphoses. First, I was against the gay rights movement. I was a Christian that thought homosexuality was immoral in the eyes of god and that being gay was against god's will. To make a long story short, I became an atheist. After I had the disgusting morality of evangelical Christianity out of my head, I could think logically about the issue at hand. I thought to myself, how does being gay bring attract so much extreme dislike? To me, the only thing that differed between a gay person and me is the gender of the person we get attracted to. Ever since, my view on homosexuality has been that of acceptance.
What is in store for homosexuality in the future? Honestly, I believe homosexuals will become more and more accepted throughout American society and eventually be granted their right to marry. I base these predictions on the fact that, many occasions of bullying against gays get displayed throughout the media and many Americans are becoming disgusted with the injustice towards gay people.
Throughout the United States I find that homosexuality is becoming more accepted. Although there is much work to be done, gay people will most likely have their full rights granted to them within the next twenty years.

Gay WikiLeaks Soldier Claims Discrimination

The young Army intelligence specialist accused of disclosing government secrets spent his 24th birthday in court Saturday as his lawyers argued his status as a gay soldier before the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” played an important role in his actions. Lawyers for Pfc. Bradley Manning began laying out a defense to show that his struggles as a gay soldier in an environment hostile to homosexuality contributed to mental and emotional problems that should have barred him from having access to sensitive material.

Why You Shouldn't Give to the Salvation Army This Holiday Season

Why You Shouldn't Give to the Salvation Army This Holiday Season

The Salvation Army still discriminates against LGBT employees and
clients. Bilerico Project Activist Bill Browning said: "When a former
boyfriend and I were homeless, the Salvation Army insisted we break up
before they'd offer assistance. We slept on the street instead and
declined to break up as they demanded.” The organization also balks
at having to treat gay employees equal to straight employees. If you
care about gay rights, you'll skip their bucket in favor of a charity
that doesn't actively discriminate against the LGBT community.

Drop protest notes in the kettles instead of cash.
Make a few notes and carry them with you. The note can read something
like this:

"To Management: The Salvation Army's policies which discriminate
against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered employees and clients
prevent me from donating. I will donate in the future if and when
these discriminatory polices end."

Print out a few copies.

From our late friend Thomas Alan Heald:

The Pridelets Files for June 4

On this day in 1998, The Salvation Army of San Francisco puts its
money where its mouth is when it comes to discriminating, telling
Catholic newspaper, the "San Francisco Faith," that they would "rather
surrender $3.5 million in city contracts than accept, even in a
compromised form, its domestic partners law."
Says spokesperson Debbi Shrum, "We didn't feel it was appropriate for
the city of San Francisco to tell us what to do ... (Our) belief system,
grounded in traditional interpretation of Scripture, does not perceive
domestic partnership arrangements as similar to the sanctity granted
marriage partners."

The Salvation Army-Gay Dilemma: To Give or Not?
By MICHELLE QUINN

With their red buckets and ringing bells out among the shoppers, the
Salvation Army reminds people of other worthy uses for their money.

The religious organization also has positions on many issues,
including homosexuality, which the charity views with disapproval.

In The San Francisco Chronicle’s Op-ed pages (which today are inside
the A section, as opposed to the back, along with the Editorial page.
I enjoy the hunt now that I’ve stopped blaming my husband for taking
it), Phil Bronstein, the paper’s executive vice-president and
editor-at-large, jumps into the debate over whether the organization’s
position on homosexuality outweighs the good it does.

There’s no whitewashing their beliefs, if you oppose them, though the
Army mission also is clear that its relief services are available to
anyone “without regard to sexual orientation.”

If you’re gay and find yourself homeless and hungry, would you refuse
this help? Some, who hold dear to the separation of naughty and nice,
clearly would.

Is the Salvation Army one of those organizations that is worth
supporting for its overall good even if you disagree with some of its
policies?

Mr. Bronstein says he will drop some money in the bucket. Shea O’Neill
at SF Appeal says if “you can stomach the fact that your money has to
pass through potentially gay-bashing hands before reaching a family in
need (because it will indeed reach them), then by all means drop a
quarter in the bucket.” Tim Redmond at the SF Bay Guardian says Don’t
Give.

It might be remembered in this context that General William Booth, the
Englishman who founded the organization in the mid-19th century, had a
view on a related question: accepting money from people you disapprove
of (in his case, burlesque dancers).

The Runyonesque remark attributed to him could have come from the
script of “Guys and Dolls”: “The only problem with tainted money is
’tain’t enough.” The story is retold in a 2007 piece on the alabama
website, al.com, which is otherwise concerned about a Huntsville man
trying to be good and avoid bell-ringer’s elbow. (For more about the
Salvation Army as Damon Runyon’s inspiration, go to the site of the
Swiss branch in Basel.)

And one final aside: Laughing Squid has a video (posted below) of a
13-member-handbell choir helping a Salvation Army bell ringer in
Manhattan.
