Canada official argues certain marriages aren't valid
Same-sex couples who wed in Canada but whose marriages aren't recognized in their home countries shouldn't be considered legally married under Canadian law, argued a government lawyer in court documents filed in Toronto. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who was unaware of the case, said his government had no intention of reopening a marriage debate. LGBT legal groups in the U.S. issued a statement downplaying the effect of the legal brief, saying, "No one's marriage has been invalidated or is likely to be invalidated."
