TEApublican Florida Governor Blamed Deaths of 40 Kids
by Howard Crane
Democrats
launched a scathing attack Thursday on Florida Gov. Rick Scott, blaming
him for the deaths of 40 children who "were killed after being placed
under your protection." The first barrage of blame included a letter to
the Republican governor from state Rep. Perry Thurston, a Broward
Democrat and party leader in the Florida House of Representatives.
Thurston
referred to "innocent children" whose "deaths were unimaginable and
shocking to the conscience,” while attacking Scott for "missteps," "a
mistake," and "your ideological agenda." He blamed Scott for his "abject
failure to protect these vulnerable children." Thurston wrote,
“Clearly, your ideological agenda of smaller government and less regulation doesn't always neatly fit with the priority of child protection, which has resulted in heartbreaking outcomes for too many Florida children."
Thurston
and Democratic state Reps. Elaine Schwartz, and Barbara Watson, each
described the ghastly deaths of three of the children.
"It
is beyond belief that this death and the deaths of dozens of other
children seem to be of little importance to our governor," Watson said.
Schwartz also went on to criticize the previous agency chief, who
resigned under fire this summer. Gov. Scott said his appointee "did a
great job."
The
collection of deaths resulted after Scott claimed that budget cuts to
Department of Children and Families were necessary in order for him to
grow jobs in Florida and the agency would have settle for less.
The
governor's office did not have much of anything to say in response, but
instead regurgitated a statement saying, "We are prioritizing spending
on critical services as we craft the budget, and vital child protective
services will not be reduced," deputy press secretary John Tupps said by
email.
