Out NBA center Jason Collins kept a promise he made when he came out of the closet. He marched in Boston's Gay Pride parade.
The 34-year-old athlete walked the route yesterday (8 June) with his roommate from college, Massachusetts Congressman Joe Kennedy III.
In his April Sports Illustrated article, Collins described how ashamed he felt about being closeted while Kennedy was participating in the city's 2012 pride parade.
'The recent Boston Marathon bombing reinforced the notion that I shouldn’t wait for the circumstances of my coming out to be perfect,' Collins said in the article. 'Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully? When I told Joe a few weeks ago that I was gay, he was grateful that I trusted him. He asked me to join him in 2013. We’ll be marching on June 8.'
As reported by Politico, Collins was well received, 'chatting with well-wishers, greeting other marchers and holding babies as people came up to him to express their support.'
This past Thursday (6 June), Collins threw the ceremonial pitch at the first pride night event sponsored by the baseball team the Red Sox.
'I knew coming out that I was going to walk with my old college roommate, and getting to throw the first pitch out is sort of icing on the cake,' Collins said, as reported by the blog Outsports.
