Racist Ohio Teacher Suspended After Telling Student ‘We Don’t Need Another Black President’

Ohio…the land of left-lane highway drivers and no inspection stickers.
Thankfully, they do have the common sense to nip racist teachers in the
bud when they see them, but only after a few incidents. Gil Voigt, a
Fairfield Freshman School teacher was suspended without pay by the Board
of Education on Monday for allegedly making racially insensitive
comments to a student. He has been a teacher at the school for over a
decade, but it looks as though he is going through the first processes
of being terminated.
According
to Superintendent Paul Otten, the incident happened in early December
when an African-American student conveyed his dreams to one day be
President of the USA, when Voigt allegedly replied, “We don’t need
another black president.”
“He was talking to some students and said some things that were racially insensitive. We take diversity in our school district very seriously with tolerance of people who are different. We just felt this teacher had crossed the line,” said Dan Murray, the President of the Board of Education.
This
isn’t the first time Voigt has shown his racist side in the classroom.
Otten described that Voigt has been chastised for racially insensitive
remarks in the past. According to a report that was prepared by
Assistant Superintendent Roger Martin, Voigt has had FOUR separate
disciplinary instances relating to racism: A verbal warning in April
2008 for an “inappropriate racial comment,” another in November 2008 for
“improper use of school technology” and a third in December 2013 for
“inappropriate comments to students.” He also received a written warning
last month for “failure to use adopted curriculum.
Voigt
could not be reached for comment and has the right to appeal the
decision before the school board within 10 days of notification.
