The bereaved father of the fifteen year-old who killed himself at the weekend claims his son was bullied for his sexuality. As reported on PinkPaper.com yesterday, fifteen year-old blogger Jamie Hubley became the latest high school student to kill himself over torment surrounding his sexuality, last weekend.
The teen, from Ottawa in Canada, made several references to being unhappy, but his father – Allan Hubley – says bullying was part of the reason his son took his own life.
Hubley says the family knew of several occasions when his son was treated cruelly because he preferred figure skating to hockey.
Speaking to the Winnipeg Free Press, Hubley said his son had recently tried to start a Rainbow Club at his high school to promote acceptance of others – to no avail.
"The posters were torn down and he was called vicious names in the hallways and online," he said in a statement.
"He struggled with the idea that people can judge you harshly even when you are trying to help others," he said. "Jamie asked a question no child should have to ask -- 'Why do people say mean things to me?'" The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board released a statement Tuesday saying it has tried to make its schools more tolerant and accepting.
"We have made tremendous progress in our schools in reducing discrimination and creating a culture of acceptance,"' wrote the board's education director, Jennifer Adams.
"We are more aware, more welcoming, more culturally proficient, and more willing to speak about the 'unspokens.' However, there is more work to be done.
"The truth is that bullying happens -- it happens in schools, it happens in workplaces and it happens in homes."
